Where did the idea for Bye-Bye Boring Bio come from?

The idea took serious shape in the worst moments of the Great Recession of 2008. My boutique publicity agency fell on hard times, and I needed to reinvent quickly with a bright idea that could serve a great many people who were serious about attracting clients, speaking gigs, and media interviews now. Bye-Bye Boring Bio is a workbook that guides speakers, authors, experts and coaches step by step to create a client attracting story all their own. Today, Bye-Bye Boring Bio is the foundation from which the Get Your Client Attracting Story Done Worldwide Virtual Workshop, Get Known to Get Paid Success System, and Get Known to Get Paid PRIVATE Mentoring program have taken root to grow and serve clients around the world.

What does your typical day look like?

Tuesdays and Thursdays, I am working one-on-one with clients by telephone or Skype to offer messaging magic, how-to advice, and customized ideas to guide my clients to get known and paid for the expert status they own today. Wednesdays are often group training delivery days – by webinar, teleclass or live.

How do you bring ideas to life?

A creative person to the core, it is not enough to have big ideas. Action is the great equalizer. I am like a dog with a bone and take at least five specific, terrific actions daily to execute on my ideas and bring about rewarding results.

What’s one trend that really excites you?

Brene Brown’s work around vulnerability and her book The Gifts of Imperfection really excite me. Because of her close association with Oprah Winfrey and OWN, the power of authenticity and truth-telling is part of the worldwide daily conversation. That gives experts everywhere fuel to believe that they can make their impact as the experts they are today without apology. We are good enough already.

What is one habit of yours that makes you more productive as an entrepreneur?

When I commit to a deadline, project, or initiative, I deliver always with the idea of exceeding client expectations for excellence and my own high expectations for results, one and all.

What was the worst job you ever had and what did you learn from it?

My first job out of college was working in a management training program for a huge defense contractor. I was lucky to get the job in a tough economy. However, I learned that sacrificing my creativity for a paycheck was a very bad trade. That was one-year engagement that put me on the path to pursue creative projects where my word wizardry and other gifts could be center stage.

If you were to start again, what would you do differently?

If I were to start again, I would have put strong focus on creating my premium, comprehensive programs and training first as opposed to developing entry-level products as a first step. It’s very hard to make an impact AND a good living selling publicity tips booklets for $10 a pair – no matter how great the information within may be.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

Get ready to go to the red carpet BEFORE you go. If you are serious about getting known and being interviewed often and much, get your story together so you can be a dream guest for any radio or TV show and a stellar print interview and tell a story that is client attracting from the very first impression you make. That means:

– Your memorable and compelling third-person bio AND speaker introduction ready to share at a moment’s notice
– The results you bring about for your ideal client or audience are front and center.
– Your professional quality digital head shot puts your best face forward
– Your speaker one-sheet offers your compelling talk title and showcases why you are the best talent to deliver the message
– Your favorite interview questions are ready to share to guide an interview that delivers real value
– You “wow” interested hosts with a compelling first meeting because you are READY to rock and serve, and one good thing always leads to another.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business? Please explain how.

Speaking – for free – to the right audiences by teleclass, webinar, telesummit, or live stage at the invitation of influential joint venture partners and quality organizations such as eWomenNetwork International and the National Speakers Association has been the single best strategy to expand my influence, enhance my reputation, and grow my business. And the effort applied to creating a working model that offers clients a winning buffet of right-sized choices to solve their problems has been equally important. It’s not enough to deliver a quality message. You must be able to enroll clients into offerings that they are serious about investing into to get the benefit or the relief. One without the other is not good enough.

What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

During the Great Recession of 2008, I learned the importance of having multiple streams of income the hard way. Through an economic accident well beyond my own control, my clients pulled away to hold on for dear life themselves. Waiting for the phone to ring is not a good strategy to succeed in the best or worst of times. I overcame this extreme challenge by taking action to create Bye-Bye Boring Bio on a dare from a friend. Within three weeks, the first draft was ready to share at a live workshop. And today people around the world sing its praises, while attracting clients, speaking gigs, and media interviews.

Tell us something about you that very few people know?

I know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, and I’ll never tell!

What software and web services do you use? What do you love about them?

I use 1 Shopping Cart to process online sales and send auto responder messages to my tribe. It’s easy enough for me to use, given that technology is not my favorite thing.

I use ConstantContact for my ezine. I love that the messages I send can be beautifully branded and that I can segment my lists to target my messaging for best results.

I love www.helpareporter.com as a source of media leads and also as an occasional advertising vehicle.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

Aspiring experts I work with often discount their experience, truth, and real value. The world has gone crazy with people feeling they are not good enough. That is why I recommend Brene Brown’s The Gift of Imperfection as important reading.

What people have influenced your thinking and might be of interest to others?

Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles – How to Get to Where You are to Where You Want to Be” is packed with inspiration and practical action to support success on your own terms.
