Five Questions with Claire Ratliff

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Claire Ratliff, an independent publicist living and working in Nashville, TN. I suppose, in a nutshell, my job is to help others get what they want! My company helps to craft messaging, seek unpaid promotional appearances and earned media for clients in a variety of fields, including entertainment and industry. There are many facets to this that all center on creating and protecting brands and spreading the word! I love working with entrepreneurs; they have a very special kind of creative drive and maverick spirit. I learn something new from every one I meet. Entertainers are a special breed, as well. My work in entertainment is fun and sometimes frustrating, but always gratifying. I have worked with some great folks, including Connie Elder, maker of Lipo in a Box shapewear, Underology skin care, and the new Go2 Bras, Vietti Foods, Grammy winner David Ball, country icons and legends Lorrie Morgan and David Frizzell and some wonderful rising artists.

How do you bring ideas to life?

It’s always important to listen first! Without understanding the unique goals, needs and culture of each client, it would be impossible to find the perfect plan or solution.

Relationships are essential. I have relationships with some great folks in the media who take an interest in client projects, events and personalities. “Think time” is key; this is setting aside time to really delve into notes, websites and product information in order to think through new and creative ways to help clients. This is just as important as doing the work and following through.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

Oh, gosh, that is a toughie! I’ve garnered some great information from so many books, but if I have to pick one, I would recommend First, Break All The Rules: What The World’s Greatest Managers Do Differently by Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman of The Gallup Organization. I love the Gallup philosophy: manage weaknesses but focus on strengths.

What is one piece of advice that you’d like to give?

If you don’t genuinely care about people, don’t try to make your living working with them!

What is one idea that you’re going to bring to life in 2012?

One idea???? How could I possibly pick just one? I may as well retire!
