Five Questions with Monica Hahn

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m a survivor of the corporate ladder, a serial mentor, an avid hiker, traveler and foodie. Right now I do marketing and strategy consulting and am working on a startup that seeks to tackle the obesity epidemic by getting corporations to take “recess” breaks during the work day.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I think you need to understand how your ideas FIT into life. If you want someone to pay attention to your idea, you have to understand how it could matter to them, what problems it solves for them and how it might inspire them. It keeps you from getting too wrapped up in your idea for its own sake.

I also believe in spreading the joy. Create evangelists and let them do some of the work for you.

Perhaps most importantly, I try to live the ideals behind the ideas.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

I’m going to go with The Little Red Hen because it has been on my reading list the longest. It will help keep you going when no one wants to hear your idea or help you get it done.

What is one piece of advice that you’d like to give?

Save some time for self-reflection. Think about what you value most and make sure you are staying true to it.

What is one idea that you’re going to bring to life in 2012?

I’m going to get more companies to implement Instant Recess in order to help make physical activity the default behavior.
