Five Questions with Susan Silver

Who are you and what do you do?

I am a contract copywriter who is learning about digital advertising by running my own blog on the topic. I am always on the look out for what is new and interesting in the field. I hope to continue working as a contract writer until I find an agency or startup to call my home.

You can find all my activities at .

How do you bring ideas to life?

I keep a notebook that I write in when an idea comes up. I then dedicate some of my time to researching them. I try to find out if it has been done and how. I root out what is feasible and what isn’t. I keep a shortlist of 1-3 that I have the means to accomplish. The rest I put on the back-burner until I discover some new information that might change my perspective.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

[amazon_link id=”1936719002″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Poke the Box[/amazon_link] by Seth Godin. I am a big believer in working on our ideas as they come up. I think we need to forget the box. The box represents our own limitations on what we can and cannot do. I say, give yourself permission to try something new.

What is one piece of advice that you’d like to give?

Attempt the impossible at least once in your life, and you will forget the meaning of the word.

What is one idea that you’re going to bring to life in 2012?

I have been studying development and design in my spare time. I will be working on a mobile app that will allow individuals to interact in creative ways with the data they generate on Twitter. I would like to empower people to understand how much content they create on their social networks by re-framing how it is presented.

For example, what if you could compose a symphony with your tweets? Turning a status update into a note. Would your stream turn into a cacophony or something you would like to share? What would it sound like in the morning vs. the evening? I am interested in these types of questions. I am hoping in 2012 that I will be able to bring at least one of my ideas for data visualization to the marketplace.
