Brett H. Pritchard P.C. founded The Law Offices of Brett H. Pritchard shortly after obtaining his law degree in 1998. He’s their senior attorney and the firm’s inspirational leader. The firm is headquartered in Killeen, Texas, not far from major centers in Austin and Dallas. They provide numerous legal services for the community in areas including family law, personal injury law, child protective services, and criminal law. The practice has been a fixture in Killeen for more than 18 years.

Some recent legal graduates prefer to gain extensive experience before entering personal practice, but Pritchard was focused on opening his own practice as soon as it made sense. He used his reputation as a strong litigator and a client focused approach to establish the practice. Clients are always impressed by the strength of his pretrial preparation and his focus on tracking down the key evidence in the case.

His legal reputation is founded on a strong educational background. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Brigham Young University, before being accepted into the law program at Texas Tech University. As an undergraduate, he participated as a member of the Sigma Gamma Chi Pre-Law Society.

Pritchard is an active member of the Killeen community as well as being a successful lawyer at The Law Offices of Brett H. Pritchard. He’s a former member of the Board of Directors of Aware Central Texas – an organization devoted to eliminating child abuse and family violence. Where did the idea for The Law Offices of Brett H. Pritchard come from?

I wanted to start my own law firm from day one. Once I decided to apply for law school it was always my goal. I don’t think that’s unusual – just about everyone in my class had similar goals for the long term. Of course, not everyone did. I think the drive to build your own business from the ground up is something that happens because you feel you have something unique to offer.

What does your typical day look like and how do you make it productive?

It begins by reviewing existing cases and reviewing potential new clients. I make it productive by relying on my team to help. Nobody can do everything by themselves and the most successful businesses in any field have a strong and reliable team as their backbone.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I’m a firm believer in the power of lifelong learning. I believe that reading the great ideas of others can provide you with your own inspiration. Once I have an idea of how I want to improve the practice, it’s just a matter of implementing a plan. I believe that planning is important, but you have to be careful not to overthink things.

What’s one trend that excites you?

I believe the growth in AI technology has the potential to make every type of business more productive. Chabot’s may have a bit of a controversial reputation at the moment, but if they’re used appropriately they can definitely help a business like ours find valuable clients.

What is one habit of yours that makes you more productive as an entrepreneur?

I’m committed to perseverance. I’ve never allowed setbacks to deter me from my overall goals. Failure is just part of the territory. As long as you learn from those mistakes, your business will do just fine.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I would tell my younger self to be prepared for course corrections along the way. No matter how sure you are of the path you want to travel in life, it will always throw you a few curve balls. As long as you’re expecting that, you’ll be able to handle anything that comes your way.

Tell us something that’s true that almost nobody agrees with you on.

You can’t satisfy every client no matter how hard you try. There will be times when you feel you’ve bent over backwards for someone and they’re still not satisfied with the results. There won’t always be a satisfactory outcome in every case. When your name is on the door like it is at The Law Offices of Brett H. Pritchard, you think about that a lot.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

One word – practice. Mental preparation is essential in the practice of law. When I’m due in court I always like to envision how the day is going to go and how I’m going to approach it.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business?

I really focus on listening to my clients concerns and understanding what they hope I will achieve for them. When things don’t go as planned I also like to look at why and what could be done differently next time. Every case is an opportunity to learn and grow.

What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

The toughest cases are representing a client in a divorce. It’s hard on the client, but it’s even harder on the child. Any time I see a child suffering because my client and their spouse can’t come to a reasonable agreement I consider it a personal failure. It’s my job to help them find that middle ground and when I can’t it’s difficult to accept. I use it to motivate me to succeed on the next case.

What is one business idea that you’re willing to give away to our readers?

In the legal world, you get to work with many diverse clients. Each case is unique and it’s hard to recognize the best approach to take with each client. The growth in Artificial Intelligence software could change that. A great idea for a business would be AI software that helps a firm like ours evaluate new clients and suggests the best approach to take with them.

What is the best $100 you recently spent? What and why?

Every month I give each employee $50 to spend with a local business. They can spend it however they like. The intent is to spend the money with locally owned businesses. When they do, I ask them to promote that they ate there and what they thought about the experience. It is a good way to get people to try new businesses and support the local community.

What is one piece of software or a web service that helps you be productive? How do you use it?

As an attorney and a firm owner, I think a lot about the productivity of my time. So, every productivity booster is worth the investment. Apps on my phone to keep me prioritized and organized is essential.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

I think everyone should rad Napoleon Hill’s “Outwitting the Devil: The Secret to Freedom and Success.” It is a very different kind of approach to making you think about the keys to success.
