Dr. Dov Rand

Believe in yourself more and don’t be influenced by what others may tell you.

Dr. Dov Rand is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist based out of New Jersey. He has been running his practice, the Healthy Aging Medical Centers for over fifteen years and in that time has created a home base for anyone looking to avail themselves of modern evidenced-based medical practices to optimize their health as they age.

Born in Washington DC and raised in New Jersey, Dr. Rand learned the value of hard work and determination in part from athletic pursuits throughout his youth. A tennis player during his teenage years, he practiced the sport constantly to achieve the level of conditioning and performance required to play on a competitive level.

Later in life, he would bring this same passion to his career. Interested in medicine early on, he attended Rutgers University for his undergrad and then Howard University for medical school. After medical school, he would go on to complete an internship at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center as well as his residence at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in New York City.

Where did the idea for the Healthy Aging Medical Centers come from?

I’ve always been interested in health and nutrition. As I began to practice medicine I realized that there were a lot of interesting studies being conducted with respect to how the things we eat and the ways in which we treat our bodies can have a drastic effect on our health throughout life. The centers were a natural extension of that idea.

What does a typical day look like for you and how do you make it productive?

I like to get up early and begin the day with a workout. After that, a healthy breakfast and then I’ll go into the office. My typical workday consists of consultations and follow-ups with patients. After work, I’ll head home but I’m always on call, so I may have a call or two with patients in the evening. I also review the day’s work and emails and I like to get some reading in for professional development and pleasure.

How do you bring your ideas to life?

My goal is to help people, so the more people I can reach the stronger my sense of achieving that goal. So my focus is always on helping my patients. When people see how much you care about their individual situation, they’ll often refer new patients to me and the cycle continues.

What’s one trend that excites you?

As we get more adept at recognizing and testing for genetic markers, we’ll be able to create a more individualized approach to care. Although a marker may indicate you’re predisposed to an ailment, there are things we can do to help you avoid it. Another big one is regenerative medicine. We’re able to do amazing things with stem cells already, and as that science develops it will become even more pronounced.

What is one habit of yours that makes you a successful entrepreneur?

I’m big into continuing my own professional development. I attend conferences regularly and I’m always reading books and studies pertaining to my field. It’s really my passion so I’m always excited to learn more. That allows me to provide the highest level of care to my patients.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Believe in yourself more and don’t be influenced by what others may tell you.

What’s something you believe to be true that almost no one agrees with you on?

Well, I really feel the focus in medicine needs to be on prevention. Making healthy lifestyle choices early in life sets us up for success later in life. It’s the most effective treatment out there.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

Follow your passion and always be learning more about your field. That will make you the best you can be at what you do.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business?

I genuinely care about my patients and I think that shows through in everything that I do. When patients see that, they often refer me to others who would benefit from my help and my practice grows.

What is one failure you’ve had as an entrepreneur and how did you overcome it?

I don’t really think in terms of failure. I would say I’ve felt stagnated at times in my career pursuits and I’ve always used those moments as opportunities to refocus and seek a new path.

What is one business idea you’d be willing to give away to our readers for free?

I think there’s a lot of potential in creating a health-based franchise that works to create awareness about the benefits of wellness optimization.

What’s the best $100 you recently spent?

I took a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. It was a great way to spend time with friends and family and really relax outdoors.

What is one piece of software or a web service that helps you be productive? How do you use it?

Google Scholar. It’s my goto search engine when I’m looking for studies to inform my practice.

What is the one book that you would recommend our community should read and why?

Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand. It’s an amazing tale of redemption and what the human spirit can accomplish when motivated.

What’s your favorite quote?

“Success does not consist in never making mistakes, but in never making the same one a second time.” — George Bernard Shaw.
