50 Health Entrepreneurs to watch in 2021

Health is such an important aspect of our daily lives. More often than not, it is still far underrepresented in today’s society. However, at IdeaMensch, we’d like to take some time to represent 50 health entrepreneurs who have gone to great lengths to help those in need & to create greater awareness about the importance of health throughout their communities.

We believe that this post is more pertinent than ever due to the world’s most recent pandemic. In this write-up, one can discover many health professionals and entrepreneurs who are making waves in the health industry to create a better tomorrow for all.

Whether it be from a sudden flash of inspiration or a lifelong dream finally fulfilled – the business ideas of our health entrepreneurs thought of and bravely put on the market, and they all prevailed. The following interviews are testimony to their success stories. But how did they turn an idea into a viable and sustainable business?

Breaking new ground, creating greater awareness throughout their communities, forming foundations, charities, and education systems – these are just a few resounding effects of their impact that continues to resonate each day. Whether these health innovations be in the form of new technology to help provide cleaner water for all, or medical professionals who are designing the latest vaccines, these entrepreneurs are motivated more than ever.

Be they young and brave pioneers exploring new markets or experienced veterans in their fields inspiring younger generations – they all have something in common: determination and devotion to follow their dreams. Through these, the health entrepreneurs listed below gathered the strength to fulfill their visions – strength from within.

What these 50 health entrepreneurs have created is outstanding; their businesses span the whole scope of the market. Longtime professionals founding their own charities and foundations, incumbent health entrepreneurs inspiring the younger generations, and some are using their knowledge and experience to create sustainable health practices for all. Not to forget – the authors, life coaches, bloggers, and motivational speakers are all striving for community awareness and involvement regarding health & wellbeing. They are a global inspiration.

2. Ara Chackerian

Serial angel investor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist meet Ara Chackerian. Ara is the Managing Partner of ASC Capital Holdings, LLC, which is focused on investing in early-stage healthcare companies. He is also a co-founder and board member of TMS Health Solutions, a treatment provider of transcranial magnetic stimulation for those currently suffering from treatment-resistant depression. Prior to his involvement with TMS Health Solutions, Ara’s professional career has always revolved around entrepreneurship and investing. He is largely interested in the health-tech and services field and has more than two decades of experience in building healthcare companies: BMC Diagnostics, Embion/Provider Links, PipelineRx, and now TMS Health Solutions, to name a few.

3. Bill Andreoli

Bill Andreoli is the President of Wakaya Perfection, a network marketing company with a focus on health and wellness. He has also been a successful restaurateur with an unwavering belief in providing people with healthy lifestyle options in their diet and in their finances since 1989. Bill joined Wakaya Perfection in 2016 and has used his expertise to help steer the company in a great direction that gives customers a plethora of product options and ambassadors (independent distributors) the opportunity to create financial independence.

4. Brian Goodell

Brian Goodell is the Founder of BibBoards and 4Ears. Brian brings expertise in eCommerce, athletics, promotional products, and PPE medical supplies. Brian specializes in communicating a vision of new ideas in the marketplace while simultaneously building teams capable of executing his vision. Brian’s career path began with college sports but quickly transitioned to real estate investment, inventorship and entrepreneurship. After a promising NCAA Division I career as a wide receiver at Idaho State University, Brian transitioned to Bay Area real estate, apprenticing under real estate mogul Frank Lembi. He is passionate about inventing new products, with the recent invention of 4Ears PPE for healthcare workers.

5. Caroline Klebl

Known internationally as an outstanding yoga teacher since 1997, Caroline Klebl specializes in Ashtanga Yoga, which she learned from world-renowned Yoga Guru Sri K Pattabhi Jois in India. Klebl’s knowledge of the ancient art is extensive and reflected in the fact that her yoga teacher training courses, workshops, and retreats have been enthusiastically received in the United States, Central, and South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe.
She has a background in Tibetan Buddhism, Iyengar, and Viniyoga yoga, and studies of Sanskrit, Yoga Philosophy, and traditional Ayurvedic medicine, and is also a chef specializing in vegetarian cuisine. She developed 200- and 500-hour yoga teacher training programs, which she has been teaching since 2009. In 2010, she received a Ph.D. in Yoga from the Indian University of Alternative Medicine.

6. Chanel Benjamin

Chanel Benjamin is the Founder of They Love My Splash, LLC, which is a confidence builder through mental health awareness, worldly education, and expression through multi-media entertainment services for children. She teaches workshops that expand children’s creativity and outlets, facilitates pre/post-production, all while giving tools for youth to excel. She hosts a #KickBackAgainstBullying sneaker drive, and the collected footwear and socks are donated to local Harlem shelters. Her virtual check-in courses with youth give them options and connect them with opportunities within her network according to their expressed interest. She also incorporates imperative and traditional structures such as cursive penmanship, entrepreneurial motivation, book recommendations, culinary, American Sign Language, and so much more!

7. Christine Lawler

Christine Lawler is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, lover of sleep, and baby sleep consultant. She has been practicing therapy for 9 years, first in Texas and now in Las Vegas, Nevada. After practicing for almost a decade, Chrissy slowly started to realize that sleep issues were a common thread among all of her clients. Getting good sleep, she discovered, would give her clients a simple and effective tool to start solving other major issues in their lives. Chrissy then founded The Peaceful Sleeper in 2018 for two main reasons: One, she recognizes how critically important sleep is in all aspects of life, and two, she believes that many parents are under-informed or feel unnecessary guilt when it comes to sleep training and sleep coaching their baby. Chrissy’s goal as a baby sleep consultant is to take the stress and guesswork out of sleep training and get everyone in the family a good night’s rest. She’s here to help parents enjoy parenthood–not just endure it.

8. David Rabin

Dr. David Rabin MD, Ph.D., is a board-certified psychiatrist, neuroscientist, and inventor specializing in the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Depression, Anxiety, and Substance Use Disorders. David has spent the last 14 years researching treatments to combat the negative effects of chronic stress on physical and mental health. He received his MD in medicine and his Ph.D. in neuroscience from Albany Medical College and trained in psychiatry at Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Rabin developed Apollo, a breakthrough wearable technology that uses the neuroscience of touch and vibration to combat the negative effects of stress, during his research at the University of Pittsburgh.

David Schmidt is the CEO and Founder of LifeWave, a leading wellness company. The longtime inventor has an extensive history of working in business and development, with 30 years of experience in creating innovative products to solve difficult problems. After studying Management Information Systems and Biology at Pace University, the future CEO spent his early career pursuing a variety of entrepreneurial opportunities. LifeWave’s technology, which utilizes phototherapy patches to create cellular changes in the body, stems from many years of Schmidt’s research into drug-free methods for increasing energy and stamina for military personnel. 10. David Weaver

For Aphex, he has invented the first non-alcohol, non-toxic, and hydrogen-based hand sanitizer. His hand sanitizer, DermAphex, uses a technology called Hy-IQ to kill pathogens using a process called Lysis. His proprietary solution is a non-alcohol, water-based sanitizer that is non-toxic and kills germs instantaneously, and keeps killing them for hours.

His commitment to improving patient care has transcended to the Specialty Infusion team, while his achievements in the healthcare industry are demonstrated in his other ventures: QuickRx Specialty Pharmacy and Cure Urgent Care.

12. Elizabeth Simpler

Elizabeth (Liz) Simpler, a step-mom, aunt, career woman, and clinical psychology grad student and the co-founder of WMC. Liz was inspired to help other working women after taking on the role of co-parenting three toddlers. Liz has her Bachelor’s in anthropology and biology from Penn State University and her Master’s in Public Health from Grand Canyon University. In addition, Liz holds certifications in Worksite Wellness from the National Wellness Institute and The National Academy of Sports Medicine. Liz can be quoted as saying, “In today’s day and age, women shouldn’t have to choose between career and children. We truly can have it all with the proper support and empathy.”

13. Gerald Diaz

Gerald Diaz is a board-certified Internal Medicine physician and former software engineer. He is the co-founder of GrepMed, an image-based medical reference search engine that helps clinicians more efficiently find clinically relevant information at the bedside. Gerald graduated with a degree in computer science from Stanford University and worked as a software developer for four years before health issues within his family inspired him to pursue a career in medicine. He earned his MD from Saint Louis University and completed his internal medicine residency at UC Davis, where he was voted resident of the year by his peers.

14. Ilene Leshinsky

Ilene Leshinsky Health Entrepreneurs

Ilene created Find Body Freedom (formerly BodySense) in 1992, after decades of personal struggles with weight, eating, and body image – and after trying every diet known to womankind. For twenty-five years, she practiced as a clinical social worker in New York and Massachusetts. Ilene worked primarily with women who were struggling with similar issues, believing that if they would change their bodies, they could change their lives. They came to her with feelings of depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, and unresolved past and present traumas. They hoped that if they could change their bodies, all of these things would magically disappear or at least become less significant. With Ilene, they soon discovered the importance of the internal work that leads to external happiness and learning to love the bodies they’re in.

15. James Leitner

When James Leitner learned that over 1 billion people do not have access to clean water, he knew he knew he had to take action. In response, James founded MissionCleanWater at just 24 years old to address a dire need for sustainable, community-driven clean water initiatives in rural Uganda. An entrepreneur and endurance athlete, James kick-started his fundraising for MissionCleanWater with a symbolic challenge. To raise money and awareness, James walked the entire continental US, over 3,250 miles from New Jersey to California, while pulling 10 gallons of water to symbolize how far women and girls walk each year fetching water for their families.

More than being an entrepreneur and business management professional, Jeff Ber is also a passionate cancer awareness advocate. As the Vice President of Operations at One Ball, an organization that provides meaningful assistance through the testicular cancer journey and helps destroy the stigma around talking about men’s health, Jeff Ber is the backbone of OneBall. Having used his own experience to guide and uplift others, Jeff Ber is now embarking on his own entrepreneurial journey.

17. Jennifer “Jay” Palumbo

Jennifer “Jay” Palumbo is the Chief Executive Officer at Wonder Woman Writer, LLC, Freelance Writer, and avid Women’s Health Advocate. She is a Forbes Women Contributor and has had pieces included in Time magazine, Parents Magazine, Huffington Post, and ScaryMommy. Ms. Palumbo has covered topics such as infertility, women’s health, patient advocacy, pregnancy, relationships, parenting, being the mother of an autistic child, and more.  As an infertility subject matter expert, she has been interviewed on news outlets such as CNN, NPR, FOX, NBC, and BBC America, and was featured in the documentary “VegasBaby.”

18. Jessica Nouhavandi

Dr. Nouhavandi combines ethics, patient care, and passion for creating the ultimate patient experience. After earning her bachelor’s degree in bioethics and becoming a Doctor in Pharmacy from Western University of Health Sciences in 2011, she worked as a pharmacist in charge of MCP Pharmacy, an independent compounding pharmacy located in Moorpark California. After the successful acquisition of MCP Pharmacy in 2017 by CVS, Dr. Nouhavandi helped create Honeybee Health with the idea of bringing the same hometown service and dedication to the whole nation. 19. Jordan Corcoran

Jordan Corcoran Health EntrepreneursNationally recognized motivational speaker, mental health advocate, and author Jordan Corcoran, founder of Listen, Lucy, is a Mercyhurst College graduate with a story to share. During her freshman year, she was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder. After going through a difficult struggle with coming to terms and learning to cope, Jordan created an outlet where people can openly and candidly share their own personal challenges and struggles- an outlet where she can also use her lived experiences to end the stigma surrounding mental health.

20. Kari Pesch

Kari Pesch is the founder and CEO of Better Smile Toothbrush Company, a children’s toothbrush subscription service located in Houston, TX. Not native to Texas, Kari grew up in Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Communications. After college, she started working at a Fortune 500 integrated communications company managing multi-million dollar accounts. Today, Kari is a working mom to four children (6, 4, 2, and 7 months). In an effort to declutter, she found 17 children’s toothbrushes around her home and begged for a more organized process. The idea to imprint the season and year on the toothbrush was born – and the Better Smile Toothbrush Company was founded.

21. Laina Gossman

Laina Gossman, the founder/CEO of Soul Insole, has a deep background in orthotic design, kinesiology, and biomechanics, as well as multiple patents in her field. Her company, Soul Insole, has grown into a well-established and loved brand. Their foot rehabilitation products are sold online and in over 150 shoe stores, shoe repair stores, and doctors’ offices worldwide. Soul Insole was recently selected as one of just 6 finalists for Amazon’s Women-Owned Small Business Of The Year due to their success on the Amazon Platform and their inspiring efforts in helping people to get back on their feet and doing the things they love.

22. Lee Sahlaney

Lee Sahlaney is the Owner and Founder of Lee Sahlaney Wellness & Pilates in the San Francisco Bay Area. Originally from Pennsylvania, she spent her early years in Washington D.C. before ultimately relocating and settling down in San Francisco Bay Area. Lee Sahlaney began her first San Francisco business in project management consulting. She provided individual solutions to her clients. One of her key passions was her ability to work with clients to meet each client at their own level of growth. In fact, her devotion to customizing solutions is a core value that she brought to her current business – Lee Sahlaney Wellness & Pilates.

23. Levon Terteryan

Levon Terteryan Health Entrepreneurs

Levon is a serial entrepreneur and the founder at Zeroqode and of ImmuneCorps. The idea was to create a low-risk community of volunteers to help those who were at high risk during the global pandemic. The team’s mantra at ImmuneCorps is that we can only fight this virus together. This inspired the building of an online village to protect those among us who are most at risk. ImmuneCorps’ end goal is to create a community of recovered COVID-19 sufferers who are willing to use their time and energy to help the most high-risk among us.

24. Liam McClintock

Liam McClintock received his B.A. from Yale and left a career in finance to travel through Asia and study meditation full-time. He became a multi-certified meditation instructor, and when he returned, he created a technology-enabled meditation training company, FitMind. Liam started meditating to improve productivity because he heard from entrepreneur Tim Ferriss that 80-90% of the most successful people in the world on his podcast meditate regularly. He began attending retreats and eventually realized that there is so much more to meditation than the “McMindfulness” currently marketed as a quick-fix stress reduction tool.

25. Maggie Flynn

Maggie is a producer, director, and writer with over 16 years of experience in film and television production. A graduate of Boston University with a degree in Advertising and Anthropology, Maggie began her career at the law firm of Greenberg Traurig during the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston abuse cases. From there, she made the leap to New York City to pursue a career in film and television, working as a producer on hit shows including Ugly Betty, Bored to Death, and Gotham. She moved to Los Angeles in the spring of 2017 to join Clique Brands, producing editorial video content for their websites Byrdie, Who What Wear and MyDomaine. In 2018, she left to focus full-time on building The Deep Agency, a full-service creative agency dedicated to the wellness community.

27. Mathieu Bélanger

Dr. Mathieu Bélanger, MD, CCFP, CPSO Recognized Specialist (Chronic Pain), began his academic career by earning an undergraduate degree in kinesiology before enrolling in medicine at the University of Montréal. Dr. Bélanger has always had a keen interest in physical activity. Having injured himself several times, he is particularly interested in pain related to sports injuries and musculoskeletal disorders. Mathieu became aware of just how widespread chronic pain has become and decided to dedicate his career to it. By founding Inovo Medical, Dr. Bélanger hopes to deploy stem-cell technology in Canada, given that the results achieved with this technology are revolutionizing pain medicine.

28. Megan Smyth

Megan Smyth is the Co-Founder and CEO of FitReserve, a multi-studio fitness subscription that allows members to mix and match in-person, live stream and on-demand classes across a curated selection of top studios and instructors. Megan’s background includes experience in public relations, investment banking, and capital markets. Frustrated by the challenges of finding and booking a fitness class without having to search multiple websites and manage several logins, Megan left her career on Wall Street to pursue her passion for entrepreneurship and fitness. She graduated with a BS in French from Georgetown and an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School.

30. Miguel Cunha

Dr. Miguel Cunha is a leading-edge Podiatrist and the founder of Gotham Footcare PC in Manhattan. He earned his degree from Temple University’s School of Podiatric Medicine in 2007. Following this, Dr. Cunha went on to complete his residency at Washington Hospital Center and Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., where he was Chief Resident. Few have excelled at personal branding like Dr. Mikhail Varshavski, better known as “Dr. Mike.” While in his day job, he serves as a primary care physician at Chatham (N.J.) In 2015, Dr. Mike launched his charity, The Limitless Tomorrow Foundation, an organization whose goal is to support students in need.

32. Nick Jaksa

Nick Jaksa is the founder of Integrated Operations, whose new Viral Defense division is focused on improving safety through the mitigation of the spread of germs and on trying to help attack the pandemic head-on. The company’s unique disinfectant misting systems help improve safety while people are entering a building, school, sports arena, and other venues.

33. Nina Hjortlund

Nina originates from Denmark but has, through her travels, become a world citizen. Having spent 15 years living in the Middle East and Africa has allowed her to develop a love and understanding of the many varied customs and cultures of the people she has lived and worked with. In 2018 she moved to Australia to continue her work in the not-for-profit sector through successfully founding and managing Australia for Cedar Tanzania and recently also setting up ARTEFACTZ.org – an online shop dealing in Tanzanian handcrafts. Australia for Cedar Tanzania and ARTEFACTZ.org are both not-for-profit companies that support Cedar Tanzania’s projects in rural Tanzania. All Cedar Tanzania projects revolve around our four cornerstones: Health, Education, Empowerment, and Entrepreneurship.

Oriana Turley is a mother, adventurer, nurse, and founder of Medicine Mountain Scrub Company LLC. Her first week as a nurse. She was disappointed she could not find functional performance workwear made with the strict ethical and sustainability standards important to her and is so common in outdoor apparel. Now, she has set out to create her own. Oriana wants to offer women in medicine one more tool to help them be confident and comfortable at work. Medicine Mountain Scrubs’ modest necklines and high-waisted yoga-style pants are unique in the industry and sorely needed.

35. Paul Shapiro

Paul Shapiro has been a backer of food sustainability since early on. He established an animal protection club in high school, which remained under his management for ten years. Shapiro then went through the following 13 years, driving administrative and corporate crusades to help improve the government assistance of livestock. Today, he is a New York Times bestselling author, co-host of the Business for Good Podcast, and founder of The Better Meat Company.

Solve.Care is the culmination of my many years spent working as an executive in healthcare, insurance, and IT. Knowing first hand the rigors and demands of career, life, and family, Rachel became keenly aware that balance and, more pointedly, wellness was essential to her vitality. Since finding that balance is not always convenient, she founded Reserved + Polished.

Renee A. Exelbert, Ph.D., CFT, is both a licensed psychologist and certified elite personal trainer. She received her B.S. from Cornell University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from New York University.
