JJ Goldsbury is a fun outgoing community minded entrepreneur who currently is the head visionary and CEO of Jack. Jack is a service management company that helps office managers, estate managers, and individuals find trustworthy service providers for various tasks.

Through several successes and many failures he now runs Jack and travels the country helping people discover their identity. On top of his thriving business he helps build community for individuals in the city of Los Angeles. He has helped many entrepreneurs and influential individuals walk through difficult situations on a tangible and emotional level.

Where did the idea for Jack come from?

I started doing side projects for people and companies that involved project management and handyman skills, simply to come up with some extra money to pay for our wedding. Very quickly I realized there are few people in my age group that are A. Reliable and honest B. That are handy. So I created “jack” as in “jack of all trades” to service high level clients and companies.

What does your typical day look like and how do you make it productive?

My days can look very different depending on the client one day I can be hanging art for a celebrity and another day I have 4 guys on a job moving an office.

How do you bring ideas to life?

Its been interesting. My prior company was a small chain of coffee shops that required new dreams and visions daily. Now operating a service based company that now sells labor the dreaming is different. My dreams now look like making “blue collar” work sexy. Simply because thats where the money is hiding. In 10-15 there will be a massive gap because people in my age group will still be chasing the tech/overnight success dream. Then causing a major gap in the service/labor industry.

What’s one trend that excites you?

It may seem counter to the question but one trend that excites me is new thinking. I have never been one to really jump onto a trend in fact I pursue the opposite of trends. The only way history was ever made was by thinking differently than what is popular.

What is one habit of yours that makes you more productive as an entrepreneur?

Prayer/Meditation is a habit that I need! Clearing my mind daily helps my productivity and effectiveness.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Let go of control and find the flow that you were created to live in.

Tell us something that’s true that almost nobody agrees with you on.

One thing I feel general people don’t agree with me on is that I believe that true success is not circumstantial. I teach this to other entrepreneurs and clients is real success can happen at all levels. In my early 20’s I owned a used car dealership. At the time we were making anywhere from 20-40k a month and I was a disaster. Through many failures I have found my true self which allows me to still be myself wether I am somebody grunt man, or running a $500 million company! When you are truly yourself you don’t need to either prove yourself or protect yourself.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

Prayer/ Meditation. These days we are encompassed with “noise” social media, city sounds (i live in LA), and people all pull us from ourselves. Learning how to be still seems to be the only thing that helps you connect with yourself.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business? Please explain how.

My biggest strategy would be kindness, Integrity, and Trust. This business has been operating for a short time and it has grown so fast I have been unable to even market myself. The way people talk about you is pivotal because you have instant trust wherever you go. I have access to places in peoples homes and companies that most of their employees don’t even have.

What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

Haha I can only use one?! I’ve had many failures and lets just say sometimes letting everything die can be exactly what needs to happen. 2 years ago I had absolutely everything, a house, cars, and what looked to be a thriving business. The whole city knew who I was and things looked amazing, on the outside. One day everything collapsed. Everything I had spent my early 20’s building collapsed in a very painful 2 weeks, 2 WEEKS! One of my mentors once said the two points emotionally that will always cause a “death or loss” is when you are trying to promote yourself or trying to protect yourself. This could not be more true, I see it daily living amongst those with fame. I also think this happens with most companies. There is alot packed into this I wont be able to articulate, but the one way I came through this failure was embracing the death of what I thought I wanted, or what I thought “needed” to happen. The cycle of life seems to always be “surrender, death, resurrection” as humans I think its natural for us to want to delay the “death” part but we will be stuck in the same cycles until we learn our lesson. (this is all metaphorical of course!)

What is one business idea that you’re willing to give away to our readers?

I have a lot of these as well! But one idea id love to see someone run with that I simply don’t have the capacity for is an authenticity database for high end retail goods. A site someone could go onto where they could look up the serial number lets say for a Vuitton wallet or a rolex, and you can see if its actually real or not. Each piece would have a specific licensed number from the manufacturer. Idk the logistics of it or if its possible but I picture a “carfax type company” for high end luxury goods. Take it and run! Haha

What is the best $100 you recently spent? What and why?

AIRPODS. They have changed my life. They are a little more that $100 but seriously best investment I have made all year. The best bluetooth headset on the market handsdown.

What is one piece of software or a web service that helps you be productive? How do you use it?

I am currently testing a bunch of options for that, customer facing as well as internal. But right now for internal I would say bench. Which is the most incredible booking app/team I have ever spent money on. And customer facing im really enjoying acuity scheduling. Im going to incorporate that with my site soon as I am building out a custom platform for my clients to submit to us jobs and needs and this allows them to book a handyman, or service provider straight away.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

Either the “subtle art of not giving a f***” by Mark Manson or “braving the wilderness” by Brene Brown. I truly believe an organization is only as great as its leader and I dont feel like some leaders do the greatest job at reflecting inward on their issues which sooner or later then spill out within their company. Both of these books are incredible and spiritually neutral in language. They walk through so much that I think every human being needs to constantly be in self reflection of.

What is your favorite quote?

This may seem narcissistic in nature but a quote that I came up with that ive been living out and just cannot get over is “embracing the mystery of your dreams allows you the freedom to see your destiny.” Which is similar a bit to Eleanor Roosevelts famous quote, “the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of your dreams.” I just modernized it a bit. Haha
