Terry Boynton

I believe if you have to motivate yourself, then you lack discipline. Discipline is the ability to train yourself everyday for when the opportunity presents itself.

Terry Boynton is the President and Co-Founder of Yonder Travel Insurance. A graduate of Regent University, Terry worked for many years as a Realtor(r) before transitioning into a successful entrepreneur. The Chaplain of the Miami Dolphins, Terry brings a strong sense of morals and mission to all areas of his life, including Yonder Travel Insurance – every insurance policy purchases provides food to a hungry child for one week.

Where did the idea for YONDER come from?

Ryan, Yonder’s other co-founder, and I love to travel. We believe that seeing the world helps you change the world around you. We started this company because many people find travel insurance confusing. So we decided to start a company that would help take the confusion out of the process of purchasing travel insurance. We wanted to help people find the right policy for the way they travel by recommending travel insurance plans based on the type of traveler you are!

What does your typical day look like and how do you make it productive?

Start off my day with prayer, reading, and exercise. This helps me to get focused on being disciplined. Those three things are non negotiable for me, everything else can be flexed. If I don’t do one of those three things before I start my workday, I know that I will have a hard time focusing on overcoming any challenges that may arise that day.

How do you bring ideas to life?

One of the ways that we bring ideas to life is to write down anything that comes to mind. When it comes to creativity, no idea is a dumb idea.

What is one habit of yours that makes you more productive as an entrepreneur?

Discipline. I’m not big into motivation. I believe if you have to motivate yourself, then you lack discipline. Discipline is the ability to train yourself everyday for when the opportunity presents itself.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Hard work will always expose hidden talent.

Tell us something that’s true that almost nobody agrees with you on.

Cigars make you more creative.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

Learn. The more I learn, the more I understand how much I really don’t know.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business?

Adopt the mindset that others have better ideas than me. What I mean is, people can see things from a different perspective that can enrich your vision. As an entrepreneur, it is tempting to think that you have all the answers, but as the old cliché goes, “if you are the smartest person in the room, you better find a different room”.

What is one business idea that you’re willing to give away to our readers?

Know the “why” you are doing what you are doing. If you have a why when things get hard, and they will, you will be able to keep what I call sniper focus.

What is the best $100 you recently spent? What and why?

The best $100 that I spent was buying meals for vulnerable kids in Nepal.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

Extreme Ownership“. This books talks about you taking ownership of you. There are no bad teams, only weak leaders.

What is your favorite quote?

Hard work will always expose hidden talent.”
