Where did the idea for Bone and Joint Specialists come from?

I joined Bone and Joint Specialists in 2011. The practice consists of the top orthopedic surgeons in the area: Doctors Schwartz, Ham, Andrews, Hong, and Knesek. Each surgeon is board certified and trained in a different specialty.

What does your typical day look like and how do you make it productive?

OR days start very early in the morning. They begin at 6:30 am and ending at approximately 5pm. A typical day consists of 4-5 spinal cases. I utilize the same team every time so each case runs as efficiently and smoothly as possible.

How do you bring ideas to life?

Spinal surgery has always had a bad reputation in the community. Secondary to the extensive dissection and muscle destruction performed with traditional surgery. With new minimally invasive techniques, we can now do these surgeries that offer excellent results with significantly less blood loss, less infection rates, faster returns to work, and less pain. Many of these cases can also be done at an outpatient facility which leads to significant cost savings.

What’s one trend that excites you?

The ability to do advanced orthopedic surgeries at an outpatient surgery center

What is one habit of yours that makes you more productive as an entrepreneur?

The one quality that has made me successful is treating patients like I would want to be treated. I try to explain things in a way they that they can understand and establish a rapport with not only the patient, but also the family of the patient.

What advice would you give your younger self?

One piece of advice I would give to my younger self is to live in the moment. I’ve always looked ahead. Finishing college, finishing medical school, and finishing residency. When you only look to the future, you sometimes forget to enjoy the present.

Tell us something that’s true that almost nobody agrees with you on?

I believe that most back pain can be addressed without surgery. A lot of specialists in my field are eager to pick up the scalpel, but I know that, for many cases, I can treat the condition just as effectively without surgery.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

I always put myself in my patient’s shoes and I tell my employees to always do the same. When you do that, you can better understand their needs and do a better job of helping them.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business?

I’ve always embraced the use of social media in our practice. We’re active on various social media sites and we often post articles and videos to help patients answer any questions they may have.

What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

One failure we had, as a business, was when we tried advertising with billboards. It looked cool, but it didn’t turn out to be very effective in generating business.

What is one business idea that you’re willing to give away to our readers?

Even though I have a physician assistant in the office, I always try to see every patient. Basically, I would advise doctors and others in my field to always establish and maintain a personal relationship with patients even if they have assistants that can do this for them.

What is the best $100 you recently spent? What and why?

The best $100 I spent was buying my wife flowers. When I keep her happy, everything else just falls into place.

What is one piece of software or a web service that helps you be productive? How do you use it?

Osiris X is a software program that converts all MRIs from any hospital or imaging center to one viewer. This has made our life so much easier in terms of absorbing information and passing it along to our patients.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

The “Tickle Monster” book. Anyone with young kids should get it. My kids still love this book even at ages eight and two.
