What is your typical day, and how do you make it productive?

My day usually starts early, with a cup of coffee while reviewing emails and checking in on urgent tasks. I structure my day around appointments with clients, diving deep into their tax situations and planning strategies. I break my day into blocks of focused work, making sure to allocate time for unexpected tasks that inevitably pop up. Keeping a clear, prioritized list of daily goals helps me stay on track and productive.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I believe in starting small. When I have an idea—whether it’s a new approach for a client’s tax strategy or improving the services at Shammas Bureau—I’ll discuss it with colleagues or mentors, work through the logistics, and test it on a smaller scale. If it works well, I will expand it. Bringing ideas to life is a step-by-step process that requires patience and adaptation.

What’s one trend that excites you?

The shift toward digital tax services is really exciting. More clients are becoming comfortable with technology, which allows me to streamline services and offer more efficiency. Tools like e-filing and virtual consultations have transformed how I interact with clients, making the entire process faster and more secure.

What is one habit that helps you be productive?

I live by the habit of clear goal-setting. Every morning, I set specific, achievable goals for the day. It might sound simple, but it gives me direction and a sense of accomplishment when I can check them off. I also review my goals from the previous week to ensure I’m making consistent progress.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I would tell myself to trust the process and stay patient. When I first started, I wanted everything to fall into place quickly. I’ve learned that success—both personal and professional—comes from hard work, persistence, and the ability to learn from every situation. The roadblocks that seem insurmountable at first often lead to the most valuable lessons.

Tell us something you believe almost nobody agrees with you on?

I firmly believe that work-life balance isn’t about splitting time evenly between work and personal life; it’s about prioritizing what matters most at the moment. Sometimes, work demands more attention, and other times, family does. I’ve found that very few people agree with this perspective, but for me, it’s about adjusting based on what’s most important at the time.

What is the one thing you repeatedly do and recommend everyone else do?

I recommend that everyone take time to truly understand the goals of the people they’re working with—whether it’s clients, colleagues, or employees. When you know someone’s goals, you can align your efforts to help them succeed. For me, it builds trust and leads to better outcomes in every relationship.

When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?

I take a step back and prioritize. I’ll look at the tasks in front of me and ask, “What’s most important right now?” If needed, I’ll take a short break to clear my head, sometimes by going outside for a walk or spending a few minutes with my family. It helps me return with clarity and focus.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business or advance in your career?

Building strong relationships has been key. Whether it’s maintaining long-term relationships with clients or networking with other professionals, those connections have opened doors for me. It’s not just about numbers; it’s about people, and fostering those relationships has helped me grow personally and professionally.

What is one failure in your career,  how did you overcome it, and what lessons did you take away from it?

Early on, I lost a big client because I didn’t communicate clearly enough about their tax strategy. I learned that while expertise is important, communication is just as critical. I made sure to improve how I explain processes and plans to clients. Now, I always double-check that they fully understand every step we take.

What is one business idea you’re willing to give away to our readers?

There’s a growing need for a simplified tax planning app for freelancers and gig workers. Something that breaks down complicated tax concepts into easy-to-follow steps, helping them stay compliant and make the most of their deductions. It’s a niche that hasn’t been fully tapped yet, and with the gig economy growing, the demand is only increasing.

What is one piece of software that helps you be productive? How do you use it?

I rely on QuickBooks. It’s essential for managing budgets, tracking expenses, and generating reports for clients. It keeps me organized, and I recommend it to anyone running a small business. It’s intuitive and saves a lot of time on the backend work.

Do you have a favorite book or podcast you’ve gotten a ton of value from and why?

“The E-Myth Revisited” by Michael Gerber. It opened my eyes to the difference between working in your business and working on your business. As an accountant, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day details, but this book reminded me to always take a step back and look at the bigger picture of where I want to take my business.

What’s a movie or series you recently enjoyed and why?

I recently enjoyed watching The Queen’s Gambit. It’s a great reminder of how dedication and discipline can take you far, even when the odds are stacked against you. Plus, it’s an inspiring story of overcoming personal challenges while pursuing excellence—something I can relate to from my own journey.
