Alan Kipping-Ruane – Founder of TriGuy Multisport Coaching

Coach Alan Kipping-Ruane comes from a competitive swimming and running background and is originally from West Chester, Pennsylvania. He is a Pennsylvania State Qualifier and 8x District’s Qualifier in High-School and YMCA Swimming and a 1x NCAA Mid-East Regionals Qualifier. Alan joined the Navy at 18 to become a helicopter rescue swimmer. He left the service with an Honorable Discharge and is now attending Pennsylvania State University to purse his B.S. in Kinesiology.

Kipping-Ruane has been coaching triathletes since 2009 and has been coaching swimming since he was 17.  He primarily focuses on short course athletes and coaches all running and cycling distances.  Alan uses his expertise in swimming, running and physical fitness to create speed and motivation for his athletes.

What are you working on right now?

Creating more publicity for myself and getting  my degree.

What does your typical day look like?

Wake up at 6am, for a a quick 30min run with my dog, and because of school I am usually working on my clients’ training programs, school work or writing articles and generating content for my business.

3 trends that excite you?

Social Media which includes Twitter and now Google+. There aren’t many specific trends going on in the endurance industry (since it is off-season time), but the big talk right now is the Boston Marathon, the Tour De France and the Olympics next year.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I tend to get creative when surfing through magazines or forum interaction. I usually get my best ideas when I am out running by myself which helps clear my head and organize my thoughts. I also keep a journal on me at all times in case I have an idea to write down.

What inspires you?

The military

What is one mistake you’ve made and what did you learn from it?

Spending money without doing the research on what I was purchasing.

What is one business idea that you’re willing to give away to our readers?

Social media is far more powerful then you think.

What do you read every day and why?

Yahoo, Twitter, news/business blogs, and tri/sports related journals. I like to know what is going on in the world and it helps me to be more effective with my athletes if I know the latest research and news.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

The 4-hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss. It’s about being comfortable and still achieving your dreams–which everyone should read.

What is your favorite gadget, app or piece of software that helps you every day?

My Apple MacBook Pro Laptop.

When was the last time you laughed out loud? What caused it?

I love comedy. I try to frequent a comedy club or watch at least 1 funny YouTube video per day.  So when was the last time I laughed out loud?  This morning.
