Bruce Huici

Bruce Huici grew up in Miami, the son of immigrant parents from Cuba and Ecuador. That mix shaped how he sees the world: work hard, take care of people, and do not wait for permission to solve a problem. He trained as a nurse before he ever thought about running a company, which meant he spent years watching patients up close, seeing exactly where the healthcare system helped them and where it let them down. That vantage point stayed with him.

He studied at Keiser University and later added certifications from the Wharton School of Business, pairing clinical grounding with the language of business and capital. It is an unusual combination, and it shows in how he talks about his work: part bedside, part boardroom. Out of that mix came Hallstat, and later Nurvana, the company he now leads as CEO. Along the way he built up multiple patents, some issued and some still pending, on medical technology meant to move real patients forward, not just win awards.

In 2019, the IFAH conference named him one of its Top 100 Healthcare Leaders, a nod to work most people never see: the slow, unglamorous process of turning a clinical idea into something that can be manufactured, tested, and trusted. These days Bruce Huici is focused on something bigger still, raising capital and building what he hopes will be the first drug to help patients recover from ischemic stroke. It is the kind of goal that takes a nurse’s patience and a founder’s stubbornness in equal measure, and Miami is where he is doing it.

What is your typical day, and how do you make it productive?

I start early, before calls and messages pile up, and I use that first hour to think instead of react. I look at where Hallstat’s projects stand, what needs a decision from me today, and what can wait. I try to protect the mornings for real work and let the afternoons absorb meetings. I still work clinically as well so I can always have that edge and be in “the know” of what issues hospitals are facing.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I like focusing on large problems. I look for the simplest solution I can think of. If I come up with something I usually try to beat up the idea as much as I can to see if I can find holes in my theory. If I’m struggling to find holes then it’s probably a good idea and I move on to making a functional prototype for proof of concept. If that works I’ll go straight into applying for a provisional patent and incorporating.

What’s one trend that excites you?

AI for data analytics. We have so much research and data that we don’t know what to do with it or what it’s telling us. AI is going to help speed up our understanding of what the data is telling us or what a collective amount of data can mean. Medicine is a very slow moving machine, and anything that can help reduce time or increase efficiency will benefit everyone either directly or indirectly.

What is one habit that helps you be productive?

I decide what my most important task is at the moment and I only focus on that one task until it’s done. Not everything deserves or warrants your attention in the present moment. Everything else is noise until that one task is done.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Pursue who you are, not who others want you to be.

Tell us something you believe almost nobody agrees with you on?

Loving relationships and eating minimally are the strongest promoters of physical health, even more than medicine or exercise.

What is the one thing you repeatedly do and recommend everyone else do?

Talk to the people who will actually use what you’re building, early and often, even when it’s uncomfortable to hear what they say.

When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?

I step away from the screen and go for a walk. It sounds simple, but distance from the problem usually shows me which parts of it actually matter.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business or advance in your career?

Staying close to the clinical side, even after moving into leadership. It keeps decisions grounded in what patients and providers actually need, instead of what looks good on a slide. That and persistence, persistence is where you can beat most people. When things get tough, keep going. The path is full of failure, but you have to push through it.

What is one failure in your career, how did you overcome it, and what lessons did you take away from it?

Early on, I pushed a project forward before the manufacturing side was fully thought through, and it cost us time we didn’t need to lose. I overcame it by slowing down and building a tighter process for testing before scaling. The lesson stuck: speed without preparation is just a slower way to fail.

What is one business idea you’re willing to give away to our readers?

A service that helps small medical device teams navigate the patent process without needing a full legal department. Most founders waste months figuring that out on their own.

What is one piece of software that helps you be productive? How do you use it?

I rely on project management software to track every stage of a device or drug’s development, from concept to patent filing. It keeps the whole team looking at the same timeline instead of guessing.

Do you have a favorite book or podcast you’ve gotten a ton of value from and why?

I keep coming back to books on how large hospital systems make decisions. Understanding that world helps me build things that actually fit into it.

What’s a movie or series you recently enjoyed and why?

I enjoyed a documentary series on the history of medicine. It’s a reminder that most breakthroughs took far longer, and far more failed attempts, than people remember.
