What is your typical day, and how do you make it productive?

My typical day starts early with a review of the day’s schedule and priorities. I ensure that I’m accessible to both students and staff throughout the day. This often means being present in classrooms, hallways, and common areas. I focus on maintaining open communication and addressing any issues promptly. Planning and organization are key; I use dedicated time blocks for administrative tasks, meetings, and student interactions to keep the day productive.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I bring ideas to life by fostering collaboration and leveraging the strengths of my team. I believe in brainstorming sessions where every voice is heard. Once we have a solid idea, I create a detailed action plan with clear goals and timelines. It’s crucial to get buy-in from all stakeholders, so I ensure everyone understands the benefits and their role in the implementation process.

What’s one trend that excites you?

The emergence of AI and its integration in education excites me. AI isn’t likely to replace teachers or tutors, but it can serve as a co-pilot that helps educators get more done in less time.
Besides personalized instruction, other ways AI can aid in education include analyzing student data, lesson creation, and grading.

What is one habit that helps you be productive?

Regular reflection is a habit that significantly boosts my productivity. At the end of each day, I review what went well and what didn’t. This helps me adjust my strategies and plan more effectively for the future. It’s a simple practice, but it ensures continuous improvement.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I would tell my younger self to be patient and embrace the journey. Success doesn’t happen overnight, and every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. I’d also emphasize the importance of networking and building strong relationships early on.

Tell us something you believe almost nobody agrees with you on?

I believe that standardized tests should be the primary measure of school success. Most would agree that the purpose of public education in 21st century America is threefold: prepare students to be successful in the workplace, prepare students to be active and responsible citizens, and help students discover and develop their talents. I would add a fourth major goal: foster empathy and appreciation of diversity. Obviously, we need to look at multiple measures to determine how good our schools are at meeting these four objectives. I have learned over the years, however, that if most students, including most students of all subgroups, are meeting or exceeding state standards, then the school is likely to be successful on all the metrics we value.

What is the one thing you repeatedly do and recommend everyone else do?

I consistently prioritize self-care and recommend everyone do the same. It’s easy to get caught up in the demands of work, but taking time for yourself is crucial. Whether it’s reading, exercising, or spending time with family, self-care helps maintain balance and prevent burnout.

When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?

When I feel overwhelmed, I take a short break to clear my mind. A quick walk or a few minutes of deep breathing can work wonders. I also make a list of tasks in order of priority, which helps me regain focus and tackle one thing at a time.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business or advance in your career?

Mentorship has been invaluable in my career. Both being a mentor and having mentors have provided me with insights, guidance, and support. It’s a reciprocal relationship that fosters growth and development for all involved.

What is one failure in your career,  how did you overcome it, and what lessons did you take away from it?

One significant failure was a project I led early in my career that didn’t achieve its goals due to poor planning and lack of stakeholder engagement. I overcame it by taking full responsibility, analyzing what went wrong, and implementing better planning and communication strategies in future projects. The lesson learned was the importance of thorough preparation and inclusive collaboration.

What is one business idea you’re willing to give away to our readers?

An idea I’m willing to share is the creation of an online platform that connects students with local businesses for internship opportunities. It could provide valuable real-world experience for students and help businesses identify potential future employees.

What is one piece of software that helps you be productive? How do you use it?

Google Workspace is indispensable for my productivity. Tools like Google Calendar, Docs, and Sheets help me stay organized, collaborate with colleagues in real-time, and manage my schedule efficiently.

Do you have a favorite book or podcast you’ve gotten a ton of value from and why?

One of my favorite reads is “The Autobiography of Malcolm X,” a powerful narrative that profoundly illustrates the human capacity to overcome and transform. “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” resonates because it is more than just a personal story; it is a narrative of resilience, and the relentless pursuit of justice and self-identity. It offers invaluable lessons on the human capacity for change and the pursuit of a higher purpose, inspiring readers to overcome their past, seek knowledge, and advocate for justice in their lives and communities.

What’s a movie or series you recently enjoyed and why?

Recently, I have been enjoying re-watching the series “Living Single.” The ‘90s series has allowed me to reminisce about my start as a young professional in the Bay Area. It has been rejuvenating watching one of the first sitcoms focused on the lives of young black professionals and witnessing the close-knit friendships characteristic of so many black communities.
