Jonathan De Vita has always had a knack for understanding how things work, whether it’s the logical structure of machines or the inner workings of the human mind. He holds a BSc degree from Lancaster University in computer science (with a minor in economics), as well as a graduate diploma in law awarded by Manchester Metropolitan University in 2005.
During his studies at Lancaster University, Mr De Vita became increasingly interested in psychology as he worked with technology. He reached the conclusion that the best tech isn’t defined by raw power but rather by its capacity to connect with the thought processes and needs of its users. To this end, Mr De Vita’s work – be it building a productivity tool or designing a seamless new user interface – is informed by his understanding of psychology.
Mr De Vita’s love of consumer electronics is a natural extension of his interest in the twin fields of tech and psychology. He is fascinated by such devices, as they blend the latest tech with the potential to positively impact the way we live. His background in computer science gives Mr De Vita a unique perspective on how consumer electronic devices function, while his interest in psychology allows him to see their broader impact on their users’ experiences and behaviours.
Mr De Vita enjoys a range of hobbies in his leisure time, including playing badminton and golf, traveling and reading. He cites his favourite book as The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis, a novel that takes the form of a series of letters from Screwtape, a senior demon, to his nephew, the junior tempter Wormwood.
What is your typical day, and how do you make it productive?
In the mornings I firstly check my emails, which allow me to know what tasks I need to prioritise. When I get to the office, I attend a meeting with the team to discuss progress, assign tasks and address any issues. I will also follow up on outstanding projects to ensure we are on track to meet deadlines.
In the afternoon I will make sure to find time to take a short break to recharge. I will then handle administrative tasks, such as reviewing and approving employee paperwork and complete necessary documents in preparation for management meetings. After that I will assist any team members who are having difficulties with complex projects.
In the evening I will review my to-do list for the day and ensure all tasks have been completed or delegated and prepare for the next day by organizing my workspace and planning my schedule.
How do you bring ideas to life?
I bring ideas to life by knowing exactly what my idea is, understanding the need for it and what I want to accomplish with it, defining clear targets to measure my success. I will then gather research to understand the market, competition, and potential challenges. The next step will be developing a detailed plan outlining the steps needed to execute my idea. This might include a business plan, marketing strategy, or project timeline. I will relay my idea with friends, family, mentors, or potential collaborators who can provide support, guidance and experience. I will then begin with a pilot project or prototype to test my concept, making necessary adjustments along the way and connecting with people who can help me grow my idea. Bringing an idea to life can sometimes be difficult, so its important to understand challenges are a normal part of the process, so don’t give up easily and use any setbacks as opportunities to learn and improve.
What’s one trend that excites you?
I am excited for the development of artificial intelligence, especially in administration management. This technology has the potential to streamline administrative tasks, improve efficiency, and enhance decision-making processes.
Here are some examples of how AI is being applied in administration management:
- Automated data entry: AI can accurately extract data from various sources, reducing manual data entry and minimizing errors.
- Intelligent process automation: AI can automate routine tasks, freeing up administrative staff to focus on more strategic work.
- Predictive analytics: AI can analyse large datasets to identify trends and patterns, enabling organizations to make data-driven decisions.
- Virtual assistants: AI-powered virtual assistants can provide administrative support, answer queries, and schedule appointments.
What is one habit that helps you be productive?
One habit that can significantly boost your productivity in administration management is effective time management. This involves prioritising tasks, setting deadlines, and minimizing distractions.
Here are some strategies I use to practice effective time management:
- Prioritise tasks: Identify the most important and urgent tasks and focus on completing them first.
- Use time management techniques: Experiment with techniques like the Pomodoro Technique to improve focus and productivity.
- Minimize distractions: Create a dedicated workspace and limit interruptions during focused work time.
- Learn to say no: Don’t overload yourself with too many tasks. If necessary, politely decline requests that don’t align with your priorities.
What advice would you give your younger self?
There are several pieces of advice I would give to myself:
- Embrace change as an opportunity for growth and new experiences.
- Cherish your loved ones and invest time in building strong connections.
- Your physical and mental health are essential. Make time for self-care, exercise, and a balanced diet.
- Don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams and interests.
- Everyone makes mistakes. View them as opportunities to learn and grow.
- Focus on the positive aspects of your life and express gratitude for what you have.
- Ask for help, it’s okay to seek support when you need it.
Tell us something you believe almost nobody agrees with you on?
Many believe that technology will inevitably lead to widespread unemployment. While automation and AI are disrupting many industries, it’s also creating new jobs and transforming existing ones. I believe that the overall impact of technology on employment will be a net positive, rather than a net negative.
What is the one thing you repeatedly do and recommend everyone else do?
Prioritise self-care. There are many studies that emphasize the importance of self-care, including activities like exercise, healthy eating, adequate sleep, and stress management. These practices can significantly improve overall well-being and productivity.
When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?
There are a couple of techniques I employ when feeling overwhelmed or unfocused. It can be something as simple as taking a small break to go for a walk or listening to music. I also like to spend some time practicing mindfulness: Techniques like meditation or deep breathing. It can also be helpful sometimes to create a distraction-free environment, avoiding noise and technology such as TV and social media. I also like talking to my friends and family members when I feel overwhelmed.
What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business or advance in your career?
Continuous Learning. This has helped me to stay updated on industry trends and acquire new skills. By expanding my knowledge base it has helped me solve problems more effectively and make better decisions, leading to increased recognition and opportunities for advancement.
What is one failure in your career, how did you overcome it, and what lessons did you take away from it?
I’ve been too quick to burn bridges through the belief of being right. It’s possible to be right, and still lose. I have learnt that the best way forward is to take people with you and foster relationships, not push on through self-belief alone.
What is one business idea you’re willing to give away to our readers?
A personalised wellness subscription box. This concept involves creating a subscription service that delivers curated boxes of products tailored to individual wellness goals. The boxes could include items such as:
- Supplements: Vitamins, minerals, or herbal remedies.
- Healthy snacks: Nutritious and delicious food options.
- Self-care products: Bath bombs, essential oils, or meditation tools.
- Fitness equipment: Small workout tools or accessories.
By offering a personalized experience, you could attract a loyal customer base and differentiate your business from competitors.
What is one piece of software that helps you be productive? How do you use it?
Project management software: Tools like Asana help myself organise tasks, set deadlines, collaborate with my team and track progress of any complex projects.
Do you have a favorite book or podcast you’ve gotten a ton of value from and why?
My favourite book is “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. This book has helped many people, including myself, develop positive habits and break bad ones. It offers practical strategies and insights that can be applied to various areas of life, from personal goals to professional development.
My favourite podcast has to be “The Tim Ferriss Show”. It features interviews with world-class performers from various fields, including entrepreneurs, athletes, and artists. The show offers valuable insights into productivity, personal growth, and success that I can employ in my own life.
What’s a movie or series you recently enjoyed and why?
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. I enjoy the original trilogy of films, so I really like the premise of the show being set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, exploring the forging of the Rings of Power and the rise of Sauron. Having a more in-depth knowledge of the history of the series provides a greater appreciation of the films.
