In 1998, he moved to Albany, NY, to further his career, working with BBL Construction and Jackson Demolition. In 2019, Michael founded MRM Construction Services, LLC, focusing on residential remodeling. My typical day starts early with a cup of coffee and a review of the day’s schedule. I prioritize tasks based on their urgency and importance. Site visits are crucial, so I spend a good part of my morning on-site, ensuring that projects are progressing smoothly and addressing any issues that arise. Afternoons are often dedicated to meetings with clients, suppliers, or my team to discuss project updates and new ideas. I make my day productive by setting clear goals, staying organized, and maintaining open communication with everyone involved in my projects.

How do you bring ideas to life?

Ideas come to life through careful planning and execution. It starts with a brainstorming session where we explore all possibilities. I then draft a detailed plan, considering all logistical and technical aspects. Collaboration is key, so I involve my team and sometimes even clients in refining the idea. Once the plan is solid, we move to the implementation phase, where meticulous attention to detail and flexibility are crucial to adapt to any challenges that may arise.

What’s one trend that excites you?

The increasing use of sustainable materials and green building practices excites me. It’s encouraging to see the construction industry move towards more environmentally friendly solutions. This trend not only helps the planet but also adds value to the properties we build or renovate, making them more attractive to eco-conscious clients.

What is one habit that helps you be productive?

One habit that significantly boosts my productivity is starting my day with a clear plan. Every morning, I outline my top priorities and set realistic goals. This habit keeps me focused and ensures that I tackle the most critical tasks first, allowing me to manage my time effectively and maintain a steady workflow throughout the day.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Take your time and don’t rush through life. Every experience, whether good or bad, is a learning opportunity. Focus on building strong relationships and always prioritize quality over quantity. Stay curious, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to take calculated risks.

Tell us something you believe almost nobody agrees with you on?

I believe that taking short breaks throughout the day can significantly increase productivity. Many people think that constant work without breaks is the key to getting more done, but I find that short breaks help me stay sharp and focused, ultimately leading to better quality work and higher efficiency.

What is the one thing you repeatedly do and recommend everyone else do?

I make it a point to connect personally with my clients and team members. Building strong relationships and maintaining open lines of communication are crucial. It fosters trust and collaboration, which are essential for the success of any project. I recommend everyone invest time in getting to know the people they work with and understanding their perspectives.

When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?

When I feel overwhelmed or unfocused, I take a step back and engage in one of my hobbies, like hockey or snowmobiling. Physical activity helps clear my mind and reduces stress. After a short break, I return to work with a fresh perspective and renewed energy.

Focusing on customer satisfaction has been a game-changer. By consistently delivering high-quality work and exceeding client expectations, I’ve built a strong reputation. Word-of-mouth referrals have been a significant driver of growth for my business. Additionally, staying current with industry trends and continuously improving our processes has helped us stay competitive.

What is one failure in your career,  how did you overcome it, and what lessons did you take away from it?

One notable failure was a project where we underestimated the complexity and resources required. It led to delays and additional costs. To overcome it, I gathered my team, reassessed our strategy, and brought in extra help to get the project back on track. The key lesson was the importance of thorough planning and realistic budgeting. Now, we take extra time in the planning phase to ensure we have accounted for all potential challenges.

Project management software like Trello helps me stay organized. I use it to track project timelines, assign tasks, and monitor progress. It allows for seamless communication with my team and ensures that everyone is on the same page. This software has streamlined our workflow and improved overall efficiency.

Do you have a favorite book or podcast you’ve gotten a ton of value from and why?

One of my favorite books is “Pillars of the Earth” by Ken Follett. It’s a fantastic story of resilience and determination.

I recently enjoyed watching the series “Grand Designs.” It’s fascinating to see the creative and innovative approaches people take in building their dream homes. The show highlights the challenges and triumphs of construction projects, which resonates with my own experiences in the industry. Plus, it’s always inspiring to see the final results and the impact of good design and craftsmanship.
