TIm Goering

Tim Goering is a sales trainer and business development consultant with experience in leadership and conflict resolution. He currently serves as the president of MakingLuck, Inc., a Sandler Training franchise, where he works with businesses to improve sales strategies and leadership skills. In 2015, he received the Rookie of the Year award within the Sandler Training network. Tim Goering is also the author of Playing the Ace: The Definitive Guide to Conflict Resolution, at Work, at Home, and Everywhere Else, published in 2019.

Before establishing his MakingLuck franchise, Mr. Goering worked in financial services and wealth management, holding executive roles at BNY Mellon Wealth Management, Seaside National Bank & Trust, GenSpring Family Offices, and SunTrust Bank. Earlier in his career he served as a United States Marine Corps Aviator, reaching the rank of Major and logging nearly 2,000 flight hours in various leadership and instructional roles.

Mr. Goering holds a degree in oceanography from the U.S. Naval Academy. He is also involved in charitable initiatives, including Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis, an endurance event supporting families affected by the disease.

What is your typical day, and how do you make it productive?

I am very organized. I start every day reviewing my task list and calendar events.

How do you bring ideas to life?

First, I go for a walk on the beach, and I take a lot of notes on my iPhone. Then I mind map it. Then I outline it, then I put a plan of action in place.

What’s one trend that excites you?

Artificial intelligence may reveal the truth.

What is one habit that helps you be productive?

OHIO – only handle it once. Minimize the number of times you need to handle everything. Delete it. Do it. Sort it. Or assign a task for when it will get done.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Follow your instincts.

Tell us something you believe almost nobody agrees with you on?

The government cares. The media doesn’t lie. Pharmaceutical companies try to cure you. Oh Yeah, and we landed on the moon.

What is the one thing you repeatedly do and recommend everyone else do?

Learn new things.

When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?

Walk on the beach.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business or advance in your career?

Share ideas with others and listen to their advice.

What is one failure in your career,  how did you overcome it, and what lessons did you take away from it?

A few years ago, I had a bit of bad judgment that led to some challenges. Don’t do that again.

What is one piece of software that helps you be productive? How do you use it?

Artificial intelligence is incredible. I use it almost daily.

Do you have a favorite book or podcast you’ve gotten a ton of value from and why?

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill is a must-read.

What’s a movie or series you recently enjoyed and why?

I’m currently rereading Against the Gods. It is all about the history of RISK.
