What is your typical day, and how do you make it productive?

I start my day with a shower and a morning prayer. I also focus on being grateful that I’m alive and well. I make sure to kiss my children and my wife before I head off to work. As I am leaving, I make sure to say, “ I love you and I hope all of you have a great day.”

How do you bring ideas to life?

First, I like to visualize the idea and act as if it has already occurred. Next, I like to think of how it will be viewed by others (perception). Finally, I like to think of how I will view it (perspective).

What’s one trend that excites you?

Artificial intelligence is a new and exciting field that I look forward to interacting with. The possibilities are endless, from personal care to business development. I am really excited to see how it all plays out over the next few years.

What is one habit that helps you be productive?

Accomplishment. I love the feeling of being done with one thing and moving onto the next. That way, my entire focus is on the next issue at hand.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Have faith. Life will get easier. Continue to persevere through obstacles. Stay humble and positive. Constantly contribute your time and energy towards good people and good things will continue to happen.

Tell us something you believe that almost nobody agrees with you on.

I like to follow the words of Jesus Christ and not so much the Bible, as it was created by man.

What is the one thing you repeatedly do and recommend everyone else do?

I think from other people’s perception first and my perspective second.

When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?

I like to take a deep breath and say a prayer.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business or advance in your career?

Customer service, first and foremost. I feel that most HVAC technicians are good at their overall job of repairing and installing HVAC equipment. That said, I feel there is a lack of concern and communication with the customer. I focus on building a relationship first, then it’s easier to have the hard conversations like, “Mrs. Jones, I’m sorry, but you are going to need a new HVAC system. It is not repairable.”

What is one failure in your career, how did you overcome it, and what lessons did you take away from it?

One failure is I opened my business in 2013 in hopes I would start receiving phone calls right away. It took about two years to build up my customer base before I could truly go out on my own. Basically, I opened a business and went right back to work with the company I was with for almost two years.

What is one business idea you’re willing to give away to our readers?

Develop a system where all employees are trained in customer service, as well as HVAC-related topics. It is important to remind your employees that everyone in this world is struggling with something. You could be the best thing that happens to them on the day you meet. You can assure them that their HVAC system will be the least of their concerns.

What is one piece of software that helps you be productive? How do you use it?

CoolCalc – It is a load calculation software that tells me how big of a heater you need, as well as how big of an AC you would need. Makes my life easy, no guessing.

What is the best $100 you recently spent? What and why?

The best $100 I spent was on a virtual reality headset for my children. I think it’s important to introduce technology safely to children, so they are prepared for what is to come.

Do you have a favorite book or podcast you’ve gotten a ton of value from and why?

“The Universe in a Single Atom” by the Dalai Lama. This book has the ability to tie together religion and science in a way I never thought was possible. It helped me understand the world in a different way during a difficult time in my life.

What’s a movie or series you recently enjoyed and why?

The movie “Hook,” with Robin Williams. I had the chance to bond with my eldest son while watching this movie. It is an older movie from the mid ‘90s, but there are some messages and symbolism that still rings true today. Also, my son wanted to watch adventure, and it’s hard to think of a better adventure than Peter Pan fighting with pirates and then realizing he wants to be a father. That is Peter’s happy thought to make him fly. It also made for a special moment between my son and I, as we both had tears in our eyes when he reveals this in the movie.
