Where did the idea for your career come from?

Working for small and medium-sized accounting firms in the past, servicing various numerous private and owner-managed corporations, provided me with that background and knowledge to start up Vince Iannello Professional Corporation. I enjoyed working directly with business owners and providing my expertise to help them make decisions that directly affect their business outcomes.

What does your typical day look like and how do you make it productive?

Routine is important, but there is no typical day, and the ability to remain flexible and have a sound support system that can assist with your family life is crucial. Most days involve responding to an endless stream of communications. I spend considerable time advising clients in person, by phone, or by email. I set aside time in the morning and at the end of the day to organize, plan and review emails without interruption, and I end every day making a to-do list for the next day so that I can clear my head. Mid-morning, early afternoon or late evening (when there is no outside noise from emails/texts/calls) is time spent performing more diligent work, such as tax planning or file reviews. I try to make time either at lunch or in the evening for a workout session and try to have dinner with my family unless specific important meetings state otherwise.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I make notes of all my ideas. Most ideas come when I am clear-minded, in situations where I am working out or just relaxing (which is difficult with three young kids)

What’s one trend that excites you?

The move from brick and mortar business to a more cloud-based/virtual business. It greatly reduces overhead costs, improves time efficiencies and results.

What is one habit of yours that makes you more productive as an entrepreneur?

Resiliency. Despite various challenges and obstacles I have faced throughout the years, I continue to strive and persevere to be the best person I can be.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Read more books and watch less tv and surround yourself with positive, intelligent individuals who you can continuously learn and feed off from. The lessons that you learn from books and people’s experiences, will be crucial when you become your own boss.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

You need to focus on your mental and physical state. You are exercising regularly, meditating, or finding some quiet time for yourself, to recharge your batteries. It is very easy to get worn down in today’s world where we’re available 24-7, but you need to find your “me” time.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business?

Referrals are the lifeline of any business. Continue to provide that attention, focus, responsiveness, and exceptional service to your existing clients, and they will provide the referrals to feed your business.

What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

I partnered up with individuals on a business venture that did not have the same goals or vision for the business as I did. Despite being a great business concept, the business ultimately failed because of poor management. I drew on this experience for my subsequent business ventures to work with partners whose ideas and business goals, and vision were aligned with mine for the overall success of the Company.

What is the best $100 you recently spent? What and why?

Two books I recently purchased and read – $20 Each. Crossroads – Story of Tragedy and Resilience as a Humboldt Bronco and Between Two Kingdoms.
Both are true stories centered around individuals who experience tragic loss and suffering. Despite the circumstances, the characters persevered in light of the tragedies and continued to make the most of life. Very motivating and inspirational books. It helps you put life in perspective and always remember that the life problems we face from day to day are nominal in comparison to others’ stories.

What is one piece of software or a web service that helps you be productive?

It’s a sophisticated tax software called Tax Templates which enables me to perform various tax scenarios to provide clients with tax and after-tax cash results in timely, efficient, and end user-friendly reports. (taxtemplates.ca)

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike. It’s about the trials and tribulations of an entrepreneur. The ups and downs of the process and the continued perseverance employed by the individual, no matter what challenges and obstacles he encountered. It’s a book that all entrepreneurs can relate to.

“As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same”

“I like friends who have independent minds because they tend to make you see problems from all angles.”
