What is your typical day, and how do you make it productive?

My typical day starts with a brief review of my emails and a quick team meeting to set the day’s priorities. I split my time between managing Vanroboys Trucking Ltd and overseeing operations at my other companies. Staying productive for me means delegating effectively, maintaining clear communication, and ensuring I’m involved in the strategic decisions without getting bogged down in details better handled by my capable team.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I discuss new concepts with my team, gather feedback, and refine them before implementation. Whether it’s a new business venture or a community project, it’s about aligning with the right people and resources to turn an idea into reality.

What’s one trend that excites you?

The trend towards sustainable and green technologies in the transport and agriculture sectors excites me. As a business owner in these industries, the potential for innovation to drive efficiency and reduce environmental impact is something I actively want to integrate into my businesses.

What is one habit that helps you be productive?

I list my top priorities every morning and focus on completing those before the day ends. This keeps me aligned with my larger business objectives and personal commitments.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I would tell my younger self to worry less about the risks and focus more on the opportunities. Trust your instincts, work hard, and don’t be afraid to fail because every setback is a stepping stone to success.

Tell us something you believe almost nobody agrees with you on?

I believe that traditional industries like trucking and farming are ripe for innovation and can be at the forefront of technology adoption, contrary to the view that they’re always lagging. These sectors have great potential for growth and improvement through technology.

What is the one thing you repeatedly do and recommend everyone else do?

Always plan your week in advance. By planning your tasks and responsibilities for the week ahead, you set clear goals and can manage your time more effectively, which I believe is crucial for both personal and professional growth.

When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?

I play a round of golf if time allows. It helps me clear my mind and refocus. I often find that a little physical activity can reset my perspective and energy levels.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business or advance in your career?

Whether it’s with suppliers, customers, or community leaders, investing time in relationships has not only grown my businesses but also opened up new opportunities.

What is one failure in your career,  how did you overcome it, and what lessons did you take away from it?

Selling my waste and recycling company too early was a failure. I stayed on to work for the buyer, which didn’t align with my entrepreneurial spirit. I learned to trust my gut more and only enter into agreements or sell businesses when I’m truly ready and it’s absolutely right for the business’s growth.

What is one business idea you’re willing to give away to our readers?

A way to connect local farmers directly with consumers and restaurants. This could help reduce food waste, ensure fresher produce availability, and support local economies.

What is one piece of software that helps you be productive? How do you use it?

Microsoft Teams has been indispensable. It helps me stay connected with my teams across different locations, streamlines our communications, and organizes our projects in one accessible platform.

Do you have a favorite book or podcast you’ve gotten a ton of value from and why?

I enjoy the book “Good to Great” by Jim Collins. It provides great insights into why some companies make the leap to greatness and others don’t, which is incredibly relevant in my line of work.

What’s a movie or series you recently enjoyed and why?

I recently enjoyed watching “Succession” on HBO. It’s a series about a family-owned business empire, which resonates with me. The dynamics, challenges, and strategic maneuvering are particularly compelling and reflective of real-world business scenarios.
