What is your typical day, and how do you make it productive?
I am a night owl. I work early into the morning on special projects and my never-ending “to-do” list. Try to force myself into bed by 2 am. I set my alarm for 8:30 but I’m usually awake by 7. I roll over and look at text messages that have started to pile up already from the PhalloFILL team on the East Coast. I get into texting conversations that usually linger on until I walk out the door for work at 9:45. Sometime during that I start to check my emails; personal, AdvancedYOU, and PhalloFILL email. Glance at the stock market and read the 5 top news items from CNN morning email. I try to get in a nice long relaxing shower to decompress from any fires I’ve already put out before I see my first patients, which typically start at 10 am. When I’m in clinic I have an entire new set of issues to deal with, good or bad, while I try to stay on schedule with what’s usually a back-to-back day with patients. I rely on my team at the clinic to keep me on track and on schedule. I’m a list maker and a note keeper. Too many irons in the fire have made me scattered so I must use lists, notes, and add things to my calendar. Even things you would think I won’t forget. I set lots of alarms and reminders throughout the day so that I don’t forget important calls and so forth. I try to go visit my mom but sometimes I can’t make it in time. If I can’t make it to her, I usually try to do a resistance training exercise routine, hyperbaric oxygen chamber session, and red light therapy bed before I head home. That’s my reward for making it through the day rather than my old reward which was a taste of one of my favorite tequilas. I always have dinner with my husband. Which is often both of us trying to catch up on emails that have come through during the day. I try to watch 1 hour of something light on Netflix or Hulu before I start that late daily stint of night work before bed.
How do you bring ideas to life?
My ideas coming to life have truly been hit or miss. Many of them were missed. I’ve tried my hand at some real estate rentals such as Airbnb, purchased a couple of cars to rent on Touro, opened and operated a restaurant once, and a couple of other business opportunities that weren’t successful. What has always been successful for me has been anything in the world of aesthetics and anti-aging. So now I stick to what I do well. I bring successful ideas to life by working around the clock until all of my tasks and loads are finished, and relying on competent people who believe in my idea and treat it like their own. Having good support while trying to launch an idea is as important as staying organized.
What’s one trend that excites you?
The significant shift in attitudes towards male cosmetic procedures, specifically stigmatized procedures such as penile augmentation.
What is one habit that helps you be productive?
Writing everything down. Lists, reminders, and more lists. I make notes about everything. I don’t always get everything done as timely as I would like but staying organized with my notes assures it eventually gets checked off.
What advice would you give your younger self?
After gaining experience in cardiac rehab following my first master’s degree, I realized a sense of regret with my chosen career path upon entering the field. This prompted a period of introspection, during which I discovered my true passion lay in the spa industry. Looking back, I would advise my younger self to prioritize understanding my passion before pursuing additional degrees unnecessarily. It’s essential to discern what truly inspires and excites you before committing to further academic pursuits.
Tell us something you believe almost nobody agrees with you.
I believe in luck. And I think I’ve always been really lucky in life. I’ve made comments to my friends before that I feel like so many things in my life have always lined up as they should because I’ve been really lucky. My friends always tell me it’s not work and it’s because I work harder at everything I do than anyone else they know. I don’t really see myself working any harder than anyone else. I know I’m not what one would consider to be a lazy person…. I work about as hard as everyone else does I believe. But life has been especially good to me and I feel lucky.
What is the one thing you repeatedly do and recommend everyone else do?
I’ve mentioned lists so I’ll go a different direction with this. I make my bed every morning and I often ask this when conducting a job interview. When you make your bed first thing in the morning you start your day off by completing a project with 100% perfection.
When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?
When feeling overwhelmed, I’ve found that relying on my team is essential. Recognizing this was a crucial lesson, I think most business owners learn. Delegating tasks to competent partners like Dana allows me to focus on providing top-notch service. Plus, spending time on my boat, “PhalloFILL,” helps me recharge. Balancing self-care with teamwork keeps me resilient as an entrepreneur.
What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business or advance in your career?
Avoid taking shortcuts: While it may be tempting to opt for cheaper equipment, materials, or facilities, it is crucial to trust the process and invest in top-notch gear. These investments will yield long-term benefits. At AdvancedYOU and the network of PhalloFILL providers, we prioritize quality and safety, particularly in procedures like PhalloFILL and hair restoration. We exclusively utilize FDA-approved fillers, even though many providers offer cheaper Chinese fillers purchased from the black market. It makes our profit margins much lower than our competitors, but we can sleep at night knowing we make the right choices for the safety of our patients and the integrity of our practices.
What is one failure in your career, how did you overcome it, and what lessons did you take away from it?
In 2007, the day before opening my second med spa location, I decided to showcase my gymnastic skills in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. A back handspring went awry, resulting in severe injuries including six spiral fractures and a broken ankle. Bedridden for over a week, I scrambled to find a surgeon to mend my leg. Despite the setback, my new clinic opened on schedule with the help of an amazing team. This humbling experience taught me resilience and adaptability. It’s a reminder to approach my career journey with humor, navigate challenges, and embrace unexpected twists.
What is one business idea you’re willing to give away to our readers?
I want to design a pod that is used in ketamine therapy to contribute to the healing effects of ketamine with respect to depression, anxiety, and addiction rather than experiencing the treatment on a boring treatment table of IV lounge chair staring at a wall.
What is one piece of software that helps you be productive? How do you use it?
I use “NOTES” on my iPhone to collaborate ideas with my co-workers and decision-makers and I use it for all my lists and tasks. There is probably better software for this but it’s simple and it keeps me organized.
What is the best $100 you recently spent?
I am not even a big Beyoncé fan but I went to see a 90-minute show with a Beyoncé impersonator with a full Beyoncé experience show, and it was the most uplifting, energetic thing I’ve done in a long time.
Do you have a favorite book or podcast from which you’ve received much value?
I used to read Medesthetics religiously when I was in the med spa business. I kept up to date with the latest devices, products, procedures, and trends. I was featured in the September 2023 issue of Medesthetics magazine which was surreal to me. Now I’m so busy doing podcasts and other interviews about the explosion of PhalloFILL and girth enhancement that I don’t really have a go-to book or podcast. We are making history and paving the way for girth enhancement ourselves.
What’s a movie or series you recently enjoyed and why?
I like funny wit. Recently I finished LOOT with Maya Rudolph, PALM ROYALE with Kristen Wig, and THE GENTLEMEN produced and directed by Guy Richie.
