Bill Scuorzo

If you follow your passion you will be successful in so many different ways.

Bill Scuorzo is a business entrepreneur who built the insurance brokerage firm BCG Advisors Inc located in Secaucus, New Jersey. His goal is to increase the value of employee benefits plans and reduce the associated costs to businesses along with providing a vast array of commercial insurance solutions. He has a small team of highly skilled industry professionals that offer Fortune 500 level services to small to mid sized clients. Together with his team of experts, they provide a unique combinatorial approach to advice in employee benefits, human resources and commercial insurance solutions.

Where did the idea for BCG Advisors come from?

I was working for a major health insurance carrier and saw that brokers and consultants were not providing the level and service that should be provided. I wanted to bring the same type of services global consulting houses were providing their Fortune 500 clients to the small business marketplace.

What does your typical day look like and how do you make it productive?

I start every day compiling a detailed to do list of everything that I want to accomplish that day. I review this list and prioritize it to maximize what gets done. I will typically spend a few hours in the office then meet with clients for the remainder of the day.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I surround myself with cohorts who are experts in their field and just as passionate about the mission as I am. When I bring an idea to the table, I get to watch it evolve as each person contributes their expertise.

What’s one trend that excites you?

Voluntary benefits are an exciting trend that greatly adds value to the employee-business relationship. These benefits are available in addition to the employee benefits plan to provide more coverage based on the employee’s needs.

What is one habit of yours that makes you more productive as an entrepreneur?

I’ve found that to be productive entrepreneur requires first and foremost that you love what you do. It requires a lot of passion and drive. I love what I do, I love who I work with at BCG Advisors and really enjoy my clients.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I would like to tell my younger self to look around and see all the opportunities. Every time I have been frustrated in a work environment there was a marketable opportunity that could be capitalized on.

Tell us something that’s true that almost nobody agrees with you on.

If you follow your passion you will be successful in so many different ways.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

You must make mistakes. You absolutely cannot succeed as an entrepreneur without failing or making a mistake. When something doesn’t work out, ask yourself how you can do it better next time. Getting a second and third opinion when analyzing the results of failure is incredibly important too. Failure provides the chance to learn, but it is also a signal that you are taking the correct level of risks. Without risk, you cannot achieve the growth your business deserves.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business?

When I am creating a business strategy, I always make sure to plan for failures. Not to be confused with planning to fail. I make sure that at every step if something doesn’t go to plan, and it never does, we are prepared to reassess and reorient our project.

What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

It’s hard to narrow it down to just one failure but one that stands out is when we were attempting to scale up our team and expand the number of clients we could service. We quickly realized that we were having difficulty scaling our staff to deliver the same quality to all our new clients. We scrambled and fixed the issue, of course, but it was a valuable learning opportunity.

What is one business idea that you’re willing to give away to our readers?

Follow your passion and start a company that you are passionate about. If you love what you are doing, it doesn’t feel like you are working.

What is the best $100 you recently spent? What and why?

Every month I spend $100 for my gym membership. The best money one can spend is getting themselves healthier.

What is one piece of software or a web service that helps you be productive?

We use Healthconnect to price all of our small business health plans. This service allows us to streamline the quoting process and deliver quotes to our clients much faster.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

I always recommend Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. This is probably the best motivational book I have ever read

What is your favorite quote?

My favorite quote is from former Secretary of State, Colin Powell. He said that there’s no secret to success. It’s the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failures. I took that to heart when I started BCG Advisors.

Key Learnings:

● Always prioritize the combination of value and affordability. That’s the recipe for customer loyalty.
● Value the ongoing process of failure, learning and trying again.
● Bringing a variety of qualified and invested opinions to the table is essential to making a successful startup.
● There are opportunities for entrepreneurship in every facet of business. Wherever there are unhappy employees, loss of profits or increased turnover, there is an opportunity.
