What is your typical day, and how do you make it productive?

I go to different properties to make sure everybody’s doing well at the job site. I stay on top of everything to make sure they get done in a timely manner.

How do you bring ideas to life?

Through a lot of research and doing background work on properties, such as checking their values before I purchase them.

What’s one trend that excites you?

New construction and concepts in reference to the looks of evolving designs. I like seeing how kitchens are being constructed.

What is one habit that helps you be productive?

Being consistent and visible. Being on-site every day that we have something going on. A lot of times when we have crews working, if they see the owner or superintendent of a property on a regular basis, they tend to work at a more steady pace.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I would emphasize due diligence. When I was younger, I was more aggressive in buying things I thought were a good deal without doing the proper research. Just looking at a property is one thing, but you need a contractor to go in and look at things.

Tell us something you believe almost nobody agrees with you.

Staying consistent and looking at properties every day. You may be looking at a website for 30 days with no changes but then find a great property on the 31st day with a lot of value.

What is the one thing you repeatedly do and recommend everyone else do?

Stay visible. When people see you a lot, you tend to make a lot of friends who may recommend a property to you.

When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?

Relax. Take a day off early or go play golf. Anything to ease your mind, as it can get hectic.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business or advance in your career?

I think the main strategy is just staying persistent. You always have to be looking for the next big deal. Always be on the lookout because there are new listings every day.

What is one failure in your career, how did you overcome it, and what lessons did you take away from it?

One failure would be investing in someone else’s dream when they don’t have much invested in it. When you do that, it’s a lot easier for them to walk away if they don’t have anything invested. If you go into anything with a partner, make sure they have just as much invested so they will prioritize the project.

What is one business idea you’re willing to give away to our readers?

Just stay focused. Even though things don’t happen as fast as everyone would like, you’ve got to stay focused, keep your eye on the goal, and work hard. Being an owner is a lot more work than being an employee.

What is one piece of software that helps you be productive? How do you use it?

Quickbooks. It’s easy to keep up with your daily spending while going back and forth to home improvement stores and paying for different things. It can become easy to work on three or four different projects and buy things for each one and forget what you bought it for if you’re not tracking it in Quickbooks.

What is the best $100 you recently spent?

A round of golf with a friend. He gave me a lot of pointers and good advice that I can use moving forward.

Do you have a favorite book or podcast from which you’ve received much value?

“The Richest Man in Babylon” is a book that was recommended to me. I just started it. It gives great tips on spending habits and reinvesting in yourself.

What’s a movie or series you recently enjoyed and why?

I don’t watch too much TV other than CNN and Sports Center.

Key learnings:

  • Stay consistent.
  • Stay visible.
  • Focus on the goal ahead of you.
