Matthew Jackson

Owner of Towne Mailer

Matt Jackson (Owner): the guy who navigates the corporate seas with a grin and a knack for making things happen. He’s not your run-of-the-mill professional; he’s the brains behind the brawn, and he does it all with laid-back charm.

He earned his stripes at the Marriott School of Business at BYU. Since then, he’s been on the ride of his life – from tech startups in the Bay Area to rubbing elbows in the hustle of New York’s corporate world. But Matt is no ordinary suit; he’s been wheeling and dealing in the Mountain West, tackling telecom in the Midwest, and spreading the good word globally with stints in Russia and non-profit work in various developing countries.

Beyond the confines of the office, Matt proudly wears another significant title: Dad. His 2-year-old is the apple of his eye, and a new recruit is on the way with the love of his life, Madi. Family serves as his anchor, and he proudly boasts the badges of both husband and dad. Come summer, you’ll find him alongside Madi, tending to their garden, or breaking a sweat while training for an upcoming Ironman.

In late 2022, the irresistible desire to pursue his dream of owning his own business struck. Fast forward to the present, and he has successfully acquired a thriving small business, relocating with his family to Montana last year to take over the Towne Mailer. Now at the helm, Matt brings his A-game to the last new frontier, relishing every minute of this exciting new venture.

What is your typical day, and how do you make it productive?

I try and spend the early mornings with my daughter, usually playing and making breakfast together. I get to the office around 9:30 and tackle any papers on my desk or tasks my operations director has prepared for me. Next is respond to emails and messages. Then the rest of the day is a mix of managing cash flow, sales calls, trying to make people happy, and planning for long-term growth. How do I make it productive: I delegate.

How do you bring ideas to life?

By starting. The first step is the hardest, but it doesn’t have to take the longest. If I involve the right people and give them the ownership and autonomy they want, things happen.

What’s one trend that excites you?

The speed at which developers (and the help of a little AI) are creating new software. We are watching firsthand how innovation drives down prices while increasing quality.

What is one habit that helps you be productive?

Running – If I ever need to clear my head, develop a vision for the future, or overcome a roadblock, running does the trick every time.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I still am young 🙂

What is the one thing you repeatedly do and recommend everyone else do?

Go to church.

When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?

Swim, Bike, or Run.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business or advance in your career?

Just doing the “thing.” Chris Williamson has said: “Preparing to do the thing isn’t doing the thing. Scheduling time to do the thing isn’t doing the thing. Making a to-do list for the thing isn’t doing the thing. Telling people you’re going to do the thing isn’t doing the thing. Reading about how to do the thing isn’t doing the thing.”

The world rewards action — just do the “thing”.

What is one failure in your career, how did you overcome it, and what lessons did you take away from it?

I wouldn’t label being laid off as a failure. But I give that as my answer, since looking back it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. It sparked the engine that drove me towards owning my own business. You cannot choose what happens to you, but you can choose how you will respond.

What is one piece of software that helps you be productive? How do you use it?

I know it’s a pretty generic answer, but I’ll go with ChatGPT – I use it multiple times a day.

What is the best $100 you recently spent?

A new shower head with a removal water flow restrictor. It’s the little things that make the biggest difference.

Do you have a favorite book or podcast from which you’ve received much value?

Favorite Podcast: All-In (helps me stay on top of what is happening in the world, as well as hearing 4 different perspectives on it)

Favorite Book: Anything written by Thomas Sowell (his writing has helped shape my perception of the world)

What’s a movie or series you recently enjoyed and why?

Recently watched the mini-series “Quarterback” on Netflix. It blew me away how these quarterbacks are not only stellar on the field but also incredibly well-rounded individuals off the turf.

Key learnings:

  • You can achieve anything if you set your mind to it — your life, your call.
  • The world rewards action — just do the “thing”.
  • Take risks, and you’ll find endless opportunities coming your way.
