Dr. Rajan Sharma is a specialized endodontist and has been in the dental industry for over 20 years. He is currently the president of Eon Clinics in which he launched nine years ago. Currently Eon Clinics operates six different locations across the Greater Chicago, Wisconsin and Indiana area.
Eon Clinics serves as an all-in-one center providing all aspects of dental implant treatment in one convenient location. At Eon Clinics, you will find the oral surgeons who place the dental implants, restorative dentists who specialize in tooth replacement, the dental implant laboratory, dental implant treatment coordinators, and the 3D CT dental scanner all in one facility.
Where did the idea for Eon Clinics come from?
I was a practicing root canal specialist when one day, I realized that patients had to keep coming back month after month to get their teeth fixed. There was no permanent solution to their problems. So, I thought, why not create a one-stop shop rather than having patients travel back and forth between different specialists? Thus, Eon Clinics was born.
What does your typical day look like and how do you make it productive?
After I wake up and get ready for my day, I always start by meditating. This helps me stay calm and get in the right mindset to take on the day. Then, I check my e-mail and respond in the order of importance. Currently, I oversee all that happens at Eon Clinics and I wear many hats, so no one day is “typical.”
How do you bring ideas to life?
When I have an idea, I will research and read more about the area of interest. Then I create a list of pros/cons when pursuing the idea. Next, I test the idea. I know I need to bring my idea to light if the first test goes well.
What’s one trend that excites you?
Artificial intelligence and machine learning. I am into various facets of how these elements work, and I diligently research how I can maybe incorporate them into my business, as well.
What is one habit of yours that makes you more productive as an entrepreneur?
Mediation and deep breathing every morning. It helps calms me down and prepares me for anything I might face that day.
What advice would you give your younger self?
When growing a business, it can be hard to find a work-life balance. I would tell myself to spend more time with my family while still doing all I could to bring my ideas to life.
As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?
I find myself reading the Harvard Business Review nightly. I would suggest that everyone go to the digital edition and read the articles of interest at least twice.
What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business? Please explain how.
The most important strategy is to believe in yourself and do the right thing. Then, leave it to God. Remember, don’t expect results right away. Keep trying your best and working hard.
What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?
One thing I realized quickly is that I do not know everything. Thus, I try to hire people at my clinics that can do things that I cannot. I myself am a root canal specialist, but we have many areas of expertise at Eon Clinics. I knew I would need to hire experts in order to make my company grow.
What is the best $100 you recently spent? What and why?
I saw a young couple having dinner, and I paid for their bill.
What is one piece of software or a web service that helps you be productive? How do you use it?
I use my iPhone all the time for various reasons, whether that be Salesforce or to see X-Rays of patients. My iPhone allows me to be very available and mobile.
What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.
What is your favorite quote?
“Believe in God, do the right thing and don’t worry about the results. If you are always worrying about the results, it can hurt your own strategy, and that can deviate you from your own success.”
