Where did the idea for Ambitious with a Purpose come from?

Ambitious with a Purpose came from witnessing many moms struggle with adjusting to the new reality of being a parent during the pandemic. A lot of mom’s lives were completely turned upside down when they found that they now had to work from home and be a full-time parent at the same time. There were already Moms who desperately needed balance but now with the virtual schooling and some daycares being closed, moms began having to juggle even more. Studies were even finding some moms were even leaving their careers because it is becoming too much to accommodate. I decided to start a business to help mothers navigate this new environment.

What does your typical day look like and how do you make it productive?

My day starts early, I try to take time for myself before my children get up. I am usually journaling, working out, reading, and just mentally getting prepared for my day. Next, I spend time getting my son prepared for his day of virtual school. Then I am getting my coffee ready and then preparing to start my job working for a 3rd party logistics company. I spend a lot of my day helping customers and resolving issues for them. I also am very involved in a lot of other components of my job, for example, I am apart of our culture committee, so I spend a lot of time planning out events and team-building things for the employees to do. I utilize my lunch hour to spend time with my children, get their lunch ready, and just make sure they are all set for me to finish out the remainder of the day. I usually finish my workday at around 7 pm. I try to get dinner started early since my husband must get up for work early. Once everyone is fed and situated, I work on business-related things, whether it is planning content, responding to emails, scheduling coaching calls for the weekend, etc. On the weekend I get up early to take coaching calls, strategize, and come up with more ideas to make my business better. Saturday Afternoons and All-day Sundays are reserved for family time, rest, and prepping for the week. I have been able to be very productive by having a routine in place and utilizing my time effectively.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I am very big on what some people may call “Doing your homework”, I am a researcher. I will constantly investigate things and try things to see if things work or don’t. I also always build out a plan on how I will execute an idea before I go forth with it. I never want to walk into a situation without a plan. I also understand the art of patience, therefore I never rush into anything. I am very fine with doing the work to execute ideas properly as opposed to just throwing something out and it not working correctly.

What’s one trend that excites you?

Seeing other businesses utilizing video platforms such as Tik-Tok. These platforms are really helping convey messages quicker than a caption under a post would. It is also a good way to gain relatability with your target audience.

What is one habit of yours that makes you more productive as an entrepreneur?

Working out makes me more productive. Since I have been working out consistently, I notice that it helps shape my day. It helps my mind feel less cluttered. When I have missed workouts, I noticed my day would be off and I would struggle with getting the smallest task done. Working out has become even more necessary now in my life.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I would have told myself to take more chances, raise my hand more for opportunities, and commit more to do the things that really make me feel good inside.

Tell us something that’s true that almost nobody agrees with you on.

That you have the power to change the narrative and do the things you want to do. Sometimes I think it’s easier for others to say they can’t do something, or they can’t get to the places they want to go. I think it’s just the easy way out. I strongly believe what you can do, starts with your thinking pattern. When you think that you can’t do something, you have already pushed yourself back 10 steps. I’m not saying it’s easy at all. Growth and fighting for your visions are not easy. Some will look at you and think you are crazy for trying something out of the box. The thing is that it’s your vision so it may not be crystal clear for others looking in from the outside. What is crazy is giving up before you have even tried.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

I read, as much as possible and plan to read even more in the coming year. Reading will open your mind to things that you have never thought of. It will exercise your mind in a way that other things just can’t. It will help your communication, awareness on certain topics. It’s just always good to read. I have read so many books that have helped me throughout my life. I love a good business book and but I also love regular books like the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series where I get to read little excerpts from other people’s lives and view their perspectives. I just love reading in general.

What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business?

One strategy that has helped me grow my business is being consistent. I know this sounds like a given but being consistent is hard and I didn’t start seeing results until I started being consistent. Being consistent in my business has even helped me be consistent in other areas of my life. Even when I have days that I’m tired or unmotivated, I still show up for my business the same way I would for my 9-5.

What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

I failed at narrowing down my target audience early on. In the beginning, I just wanted to help everyone. I wasn’t specific enough in who would benefit more from working with me. It was hard for me to initially find out who my ideal client was. My mentor put me in contact with a speaker that helped me to look into my story and figure out who my target audience was. When we realized that motherhood was the one thing that kept coming up for me being that motherhood helped shape me into everything I am today. I was able to then pull from my background of being a mom of 14 years. My experience of going through times where I didn’t know how I would juggle it all while being a single mom with my first child helped my vision. I was then able to narrow down my audience to moms and I became obsessively passionate about my mission of helping moms through their struggles. I initially wasted a lot of time before understanding who my target audience was which caused me to fail. Now that failure has helped me to become more clear on the direction of my business.

What is one business idea that you’re willing to give away to our readers?

I would say virtual event planning. Although it’s not the ideal way to have an event. People are adjusting and finding great benefits in being virtual, such as not having to pay thousands of dollars for the spaces to rent, food, etc. Another plus is it gives people a chance from all over the world to be apart of the event which is a bonus to the person creating the event. People are able to save on airfare as well. I really believe this will be still utilized heavily even after the pandemic is over.

What is the best $100 you recently spent? What and why?

I recently donated to a couple of toy drives, It is something I try to do every year, but this year it really made me feel good to give back considering how many families are without this year.

What is one piece of software or a web service that helps you be productive?

Later.com, which is a social media management tool that allows you to put content out onto social media platforms for the future. I use it for content batching. Since I am a mom with so many responsibilities, I don’t want to be tied to my phone every day on social media putting out content. I use this platform to schedule all my content on a calendar to automatically post for me throughout the week. Sometimes I plan out a few weeks in advance. It’s like almost having a virtual assistant.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

Deep Work” by Cal Newport – This book focuses a lot on helping you get rid of distractions in order to be successful. I think this book is very important for anyone that wants to be an entrepreneur because it takes a lot of hard work and discipline. It is very easy to get distracted by so many things. This book has helped me tremendously.
